You know the ones: soft pillow-like inside with a super sweet thick powdered sugar coating on the outside. Oh boy did we love those. Even to this day when we walk into a gas station we see them sitting on the shelf and smile. Quick flashback of memories run through our minds.
Now our tastes and choice of ingredients have changed over the years. This is our Purely Twins twist on the classic powdered sugar donut recipe. We like to use a little more gut and skin friendly ingredients and less sugar when it comes to baking. Baking donuts is no different. We love the ingredients we use now in our recipes and still get just as satisfied with them as the classics.

This recipe is perfect for those times we want powdered donuts but don’t want all the processed ingredients. Here is a less processed version made the Purely Twins way.
We know it’s not “100% healthy” but healthier than the kind in the bag. And we aren’t about being 100% perfectly healthy. We’re about changing ingredients to make a healthier option when we can, but still having fun.
How to make gluten-free, grain-free protein baked donut holes.
These baked mini donuts are soft, light and not overly sweet. And the best part is that the powdered sugar coating is made without powdered sugar.
Yep you heard us right! We used our favorite protein powder mixed with arrowroot starch for a protein packed alternative.
Of course you can add in some powdered sugar to the coating for a little more sweetness.
Make sure to use a protein powder you like because it will taste like it. Or you can omit the protein powder and use powdered sugar or make your own low sugar alternative coating.
Either way these donuts are meant for you to love and enjoy every bite so make sure you do just that!
Quick and easy low-sugar protein powdered sugar donut hole recipe made in minutes
These donut holes are made with plantain flour to make them grain-free. We were going to use plantains but decided to try it out with plantain flour. It turned out beautifully.
Plantain flour can be a little dense so with the one egg and mix of arrowroot starch really lightened the final texture in these donuts.
They are chewy, light and delicious.
One thing about these donuts is that they are BEST enjoyed the day of.
But… you’re in luck!
We froze some of our donuts to see if you could freeze them and enjoy them later just the same … and it worked!! Yay!
You just pop the frozen donut holes into a 350 degree oven for about 8-10 minutes. They are warm and delicious just like they were freshly made!

For some substitution ideas:
To replace the plantain flour you can try tigernut flour, rice flour or almond flour. We buy our plantain flour off Amazon.
To replace the arrowroot starch you can try tapioca starch or potato starch.

Kids LOVE them and easy enough to weekday breakfast. Baked mini donut holes that are gluten-free, grain-free, dairy-free, paleo friendly and low in sugar.
- Prep Time: 2 minutes
- Cook Time: 15 minutes
- Total Time: 17 minutes
- Yield: 20 mini donuts holes 1x
- 2/3 cup plantain flour (85g)
- 1/2 cup arrowroot starch (60g)
- 1/4 cup of sugar (coconut sugar, erythritol, or regular sugar)
- 1 egg
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 3 tablespoons flax meal
- 3 tablespoons coconut oil, liquid
- 1/2 cup of full fat coconut milk (we use canned)
protein powdered sugar coating
- 3 tablespoons protein powder of choice (we used Perfect Fit)
- 1–2 tablespoons arrowroot starch
- Preheat oven 350 degrees.
- Place all dry ingredients into a large bowl.
- Next add in egg, coconut oil and milk.
- Stir until combined.
- Lightly grease a mini muffin pan with coconut oil.
- Spoon donut batter into mini muffin pan.
- Makes 20 mini donut holes (depending on scoop).
- Bake donut holes for 13-15 minutes.
- As donut holes are baking make protein powdered sugar coating.
- In a small bowl place protein powder and arrowroot starch and stir.
- Once donut holes are done baking pop out of muffin pan and start to coat them.
- Lightly coat each mini donut hole with some coconut oil and coat with powdered sugar mixture.
- Complete until all donuts are covered.
- You may have to double the sugar mixture if needed.
Breakfast just got a little sweeter and fun.

I actually received a sample of Perfect Fit protein at the LA Fit Expo! I am very excited about it but I didn’t know what to do with it! This looks like a great recipe but I may need more protein powder 😀
