How to make money from having ads on your blog

by purelytwins

Have you’ve ever wondered how to make money from blogging? We did too.

Over the years we have learned that there are MULTIPLE ways to make money from blogging.  Today we are focusing on having ads on your site to help monetize it. We will discuss other revenue sources in another post.

The big question: to have ads or not to have ads on your blog?

The ads we are referring to are display ads. Ads that use graphics or images similar to billboards or magazines. You can find these kind of ads in sidebars, headers, footers and within content.

We also wanted to mention that you don’t have to put ads on your site if you don’t want to. You don’t have to use your blog as a way to make money. But if you are someone interested in making some money this is for you.

In the video we discuss why we have ads on our site and the ad companies we have (and currently) work with.

How to make money from ads on your blog

Why we have ads on our blog, the companies we work with and the money we make from them.

We’ve learned that the average person can make money blogging. Just like having your own business you have to do the work to make it happen. You can’t just sit around waiting for the money to come in.

Remember everyone’s journey to making money from blogging will vary.  Bloggers who are making a living off their blog have been doing it for years and have put in a lot of hard work. Don’t blog just for the money. Blog because you want to help or share with others.

We are sharing all this because we want to help you. And you help us.

We hope through all of this we are all learning from each other. Our readers teach us new things everyday! We love that about blogging – the community feel.

We are focusing on providing even better content to continue to build our exposure, authority and trust. Our blog is our brand. We will continue to invest in ourselves and our blog to make it better.

We want to be completely honest with you so we are sharing some of our numbers with you.

Like we said in the video the more pageviews a blog gets the more revenue. When we started blogging our pageviews were around 20,000, then it went to 42,000, then over 64,000 and now we got around 400,000 – 500,000.  We are not the biggest as you can see but we are proud and appreciate every single person that comes to our blog.

In 2013 we got almost 5 million pageviews for the year, then in 2014 we got about 5.5 million. This is good to see the increase.  We have worked hard and will continue to improve our blog.

We love blogging. We love the community. We wish we could do it for free (without ads) but for now having the ads allows us to continue to share FREE stuff here on the blog.

Ad companies we have used on our site to make money:

Google ads – started off with $20 then into 2013 made $200 then into 2014 made $300-400. Now we only have one or two google ads.

Federated Media (foodbuzz) –  started off with about $50 and went up to about $300+. We no longer use them.

Foodie Blogroll –  started off with about $150 and ended up making about $300+ after being with them for a few months. Now we only use them on our old blog and make less than $50 a month from it.

Glam (mode media) –  started off with about $145 then $400 to $500 to $700 a month in 2014. We no longer use them.

Lijit networks-  we made from anywhere from $200 to $600 a month with them. Used them a few months but no longer use them.

Foxwood Media (Today’s mama) – had one ad and made about $30-40 a month

The Blogger Network – started off with over $200. We enjoyed working with them. They were helpful and answered any question we had about our ads.

AdThrive  – (currently using) – we love working with them. They control ad placement and make sure they are best optimized for our site.

General expenses with blogging:

  • hosting – we talked about hosting here
  • email provider – some are free until you hit a certain limit
  • ingredients (for recipes)
  • supplies
  • web and technical help
  • miscellaneous expenses – fonts, plugins, education, etc
  • and of course your TIME

On average (for us lately) our expenses are around $600-$1,000 a month. So you can see the money we make of our ads goes to cover those expenses.

Key takeaways:

  • Just start with google ads then you can add more display ads later. Start with just a few ads maybe 1-2 at the beginning.
  • It’s not a bad thing to want to make some money from blogging.
  • The amount you make will vary on size of blog, the ad network you are with and how many ads are on your site.
  • Do your research on finding the right ad network for you and your blog. We tried several!
  • Track ads to see which ones are working best for you.
  • Running a blog and website can be expensive and time consuming if you want to make it a business.
  • Having a “read more” or “click here” to learn more helps you get more pageviews, which the more pageviews you have the potential to make more money increases.
  • And the biggest thing to focus on is providing quality content and sharing things you love to help someone else. Always be you and work hard. Blogging can be a lot of fun so go for it!

We hope this has inspired you to take action with your blog or business.

This is not a competition on how much money you can make off blogging. We are here sharing this because we want to help you and would like feedback so we can learn from you too. Like we mentioned in the video we started off just making around $40 at the start. Now our blog makes over $1,000. We don’t use ads as our main source of income but rather to help cover the cost to run and maintain our site.

We love what we do. We love creating new free content for you every day. We want to say thank you for being here and supporting us by clicking around on our blog. Without you, we would not be here. We look forward to growing more so we can do MORE for you. We will continue to share the best content we can to help you.

hi twins 🙂

fellow twin here. I have a couple blogs I use, and also blog ideas I haven’t tried yet. can I ask you a $$ question about ads? I’m wondering how much you pull in from ads right now, or how much you did when you started, or what you make per ad, on average.

You could email me, if you wanted to tell me discretely. I’m really interested how people are able to fund their passions and help advertisers 🙂

we answered what we made and make off our ads above in post. each ad we made different amounts and majority of our 3rd party ad networks we are no longer using, we are transitioning into using AdThrive so unsure at the moment what we will be making from them.

I’d love to see that as well– any recommendations for Software? I used Microsoft Word last time because it was easy to convert into a PDF, but wasn’t thrilled with the outcome.

let me know what you think about blogger network. i am on them too. I want to check out adthrive next. For sure!

Lindsay so far blogger network has been good we are now making about $500-600. The only issue we have with them is that they break up the payments and don’t seem to give it to you all at once so that gets annoying.

Great post loves! Extremely helpful. I started blogging not wanting to make money at all, but now I’m thinking it would at least be nice to make some to cover the expenses for making recipes on my blog 🙂 I love sharing content with my readers and other bloggers and want to keep it going for a long time! Keep it up 🙂
