8 must-have newborn items for first time moms

by purelytwins

I love these kinds of posts.

When I was preparing for Madison to arrive I would Google must-have baby items so I had everything that I felt I needed. I love seeing what other moms had and felt was useful.

I hope you enjoy my must-have newborn items that I loved and used. I did not get paid or asked to mention these items. These are all products I bought and loved, and I wanted to share them with you.

8 newborn baby must-haves to make life easier to survive newborn phase purelytwins

Your newborn checklist.

Fisher price play-n-rocker  – one of the most used items! Madison loves sleeping in this and just chilling and watching her surroundings. This was actually a gift from one of Gary’s cousins since her child loved it so much. Truly a must-have for us! A great and safe place to rest the baby.

Aden + Anais swaddle blanket – love this. Perfect for just about everything. Highly recommend.

Dr. browns breast pads – never thought my small boobs would produce so much milk. Never thought I would need breast pads but after a day of leaking I realized I needed them. I really liked this style of breast pads.

Puj tub for baths. Simple to use and does the job.

Solly wrap baby carrier – perfect for newborns I feel. Madison loved being in it as she was so close to me. It is fairly easy to figure out how to put on after a few tries.  I feel it is worth getting some kind of baby carrier to wear your baby as it is perfect for when they are fussy to help calm them down.

Traveling diaper bag changing pad – perfect for using in the car or random places. I got this one from JJ Cole Collections and love it!! It doesn’t take up a lot of space in the diaper bag and so easy to use. Plus it’s cute!

Bobby pillow – use this for so many different things from nursing, to propping, to using it as a resting place for arms when holding her late at night.

Stroller and car seat travel system – we got the chicco keyfit 30 travel system and love it. Makes it super easy to transport a newborn around.

Here are more great baby items that really helped me survive the newborn phase.

Other items to help survive life with a newborn:

Comfortable nursing tops and bras –> I got a cami Leading lady and the nursing bra from them and loved them. They are super comfy. It really comes down to personal preference on brand and style.

White noise –> This sound sleeper app that’s great white noise, if you are into white noise (this was a lifesaver for us). Madison loves the river and seashore sounds.

Books –> here are a few books that I enjoyed reading to help prepare me –

What to Expect the First Year by Heidi Murkoff

The Vaccine Book by Robert W. Sears, M.D.

Healthy Sleep Habit, Healthy Happy Child by Marc Weissbluth, M.D.

The Happiest Baby on the Block by Harvey Karp, M.D.

Caring for Your Baby and Young Child: Birth to Age 5 by Steven P. Shelov, M.D. and Tanya Altmann, M.D.

Other items to consider:

Second stroller –> I probably should have gotten a more simple, lightweight second stroller but haven’t yet. I realized that it is nice to have a second smaller one for quick errands so you don’t have to carry the big stroller around everywhere.

Swing –> Madison did not like her cradle-n-swing. I feel it depends on the baby if they will like a swing or not. I know a lot of other parents who said their babies loved the swing.

We started out with 0 strollers and now have 2. LOL. Things change as they get older and your needs change. We have a lightweight umbrella style and a BOB now. Great list!

We have the Aden and Anais muslin square and really cannot fault the quality, I love their fun prints too. Wraps are such a life saver and I wouldn’t be without mine now. My little boy goes through clingy phases or where he will only sleep on our chests and I just can’t get anything done. Yay for being productive whilst caring for a newborn!

I love these posts too! Wish we could get Solly wraps in the UK but I guess the one I have is very similar, I’d be lost without mine! We got a swing for Finley and he doesn’t like his either although he’s only just started to enjoy his bouncy chair so you never know he might take to it when he’s a bit bigger 🙂
