vlog: cloth diapers 101 for first time mom

by purelytwins

Cloth diapers 101 video with a first time mom.

Let me tell you the day that Michelle and I had yesterday.

I felt like I was never really home. I got up with Gary around 5:45am to get him ready to head to the airport to leave town for the night for a business trip. Wait. Let me back up a quick second. This all really started around 3am or so when I usually get up for a nighttime pee break.

As I was going back to bed I passed Jax who was sleeping in his doggy bed next to our bed. I heard him growl (he does this when he has done something wrong). I ignored it as it was 3am in the morning as I was half asleep.

Then at 5:45am Jax started to growl more. I looked at Gary and said I think he got sick or something. Gary walked over and sure enough there was throw-up all over the floor. I cleaned it up and everything seemed ok. Michelle arrived a little bit later and we enjoyed our typical morning routine.

Later in the morning we filmed some new recipe videos for our newsletter. Arrived home and throw up #2 happened. I quickly cleaned it up then it was time for me to head to the dentist. Dentist went great. No issues.

I arrived back at home and chatted with Michelle as we made our lunch. Then Jax got sick again. I cleaned it up and thought this would be the last time he would get sick. I did some laundry before I headed out the door for my pregnancy doctor’s checkup. My visit went quick and baby M is doing great. I am not dilated yet but I am effacing, which is good and typical for first-time moms.

I drove home and chatted with Michelle about her doctor’s visit about her results from the MRT test that she got done a few days ago. She will update you all soon. Then Jax got sick again. Michelle and I cleaned up all the vomit.

I started to cry. What was going on with my dog?

Michelle, Jax and I got in the car and head to the vet’s office. Luckily, they were still open. They did some x-rays on Jax and didn’t find anything too major but the vet had some concerns. Oh, I forgot to mention, Jax ate an ear of corn while we were home this past weekend.

So, the vet thinks that was what was causing Jax to vomit. He received some medicine and we go back in the morning for more x-rays. Hopefully, it will all come back clear. Fingers crossed.

I know this all has nothing to do with cloth diapers.

But in a way maybe it does. It is getting me prepared for dirty diapers, throw up, etc from baby M here soon 😉

I wanted to create a video about how I am going to use cloth diapers for baby M. A 101 video all about cloth diapers and what I bought to use.  Enjoy the video!

Cloth diapers 101 for newbies parents.

I go over a lot as there is so much to learn and remember. I know it will all get easier for me once I actually start using the cloth diapers and create a system. I will continue to share updates on my cloth diapering experience. Let me know if I missed something or if there is something you want to see more about. Thanks!

I hang-dry the covers and all-in-ones. And I dry the inserts and prefolds in the dryer.

Cloth diapers mentioned in video that I bought to try out:

1 Green Mountain workhorse for newborn with snap

2 Green Mountain workhorse size small (snapless)

12 Green Mountain unbleached prefolds for newborns

12 Green Mountain unbleached prefolds  size small

1 Simplex for new borns all-in one

1 simplex newborn

2 Thirsties duo wrap diaper cover with hook and loop size 1

Thirsties diaper cover with hook and look size xs-small

1 Bum Genius all one ones – one size snap closure

1 Bum Genius freetime all-in one one size snap closure

1 Grovia single diaper shell

Planet wise reusable diaper pail liner

Planet wise wet diaper bag in medium

Snappi fastener

Prince lionheart wipes warmer

Diaper pail

Grovia diaper wipes (think I have 3 sets of these)

I bought most of these items myself with a few being gifts. I have no affiliation with any brand.

Like I mentioned in the video I purchased a few different styles to play around with until I discover what style I like most. I didn’t want to buy all these cloth diapers and never use them. I did my research and this is what I felt was a good starting point for me. I know I might need more covers or something.

Yay for cloth diapers 😉

In the video I also go over how I prepped all these diapers, how I clean them and what I am going to do when there is poop! And more!

Let me know if you have any questions about anything.

Cloth diapering is all new to me and I know I have a lot to learn. Thanks for letting me share my first time experience here on the blog. I am sure I will make plenty of mistakes, but that is the best way to learn right?

If you used cloth diapers, do you have any tips or advice for me?

Not pregnant, would you use cloth diapers or no?

How was your day yesterday? Are you doing anything fun this weekend?

Lori,

My dog ate corn a few years back…the entire ear as well. Same thing…lots of barfing to get those undigestible parts out. Let us know how he’s doing soon 🙂

We started out with pre folds as well. Then when she started solids we switched to Bum Genius. We have the pocket style that I hate. The Bum Genius Freetime (or Elemental is organic) are awesome. Next kid I’m getting all Freetimes. Good for you for cloth diapering! We have had a good experience with them.

I just had the basic cloth diapers you can buy in the store, and then did a diaper service that came to the house. I used a variety of covers that I found at the thrift store. They can get yucky and stained after awhile so every few weeks I would buy a new stack and toss the others away. I had a few disposables because with cloth diapers you end up changing their diaper more often, but sometimes it isn’t feasible, as when you are on a long car ride and there’s no good place to stop, or you don’t want to haul dirty diapers in the car and smell the aroma for hours, as examples. But 95% of the time I used cloth, and my children rarely got diaper rashes. It really is a preference issue for the kinds of diapers and wraps you use as there is no right or wrong. My advice is to change them often, to both buy more and bring more than you think you need when you leave the house (cloth diapers make excellent burp rags, wash rags, something to put the baby on when in a store, for example and you left your changing pad at home, etc. Invest in a good diaper rash cream because no matter how careful you are, they will get rashes. I liked the heavy white cream ones for when they had stomach upsets and that saved their skin. Even though my baby days are long gone (my “baby” is 26), it has been fun to read and see pictures of your journey to motherhood. I know the birth is coming soon, and I wish you the best of luck in all of it and that you give birth to a healthy and beautiful baby!

That is a good stash of diapers! I’ve cloth diapered all my 4 children and my favorite diapers are bumGenius. Prefolds and covers are good for at home but trips out of the house usually require something smaller and easier like all-in-ones. Best of luck. Cloth diapers are a wonderful gift to baby’s skin and the future environment.
