thoughts on my first trimester & 14 week update

by purelytwins

Happy April 1st!!! Our birthday month!!! We plan on celebrating all month 😉

Now with the little one on the way we have even more to celebrate!

I am continuing my story of being pregnant. If you don’t care about pregnancy related things please feel free to skip over this post.

Thoughts of my first trimester and sharing my 14 week update.

Still hard for me to believe that I am on week 14 of my pregnancy and that my first trimester is already over. I really enjoyed my first few months of pregnancy. It went by fairly smoothly.  I am excited for my second trimester and watching my body change even more.

How did you tell your family?

I first told my mom after my first appointment with the doctor on February 1st.  I wanted to tell someone besides Gary and Michelle (no offense you two).

telling my mom

Here I am telling my mom over the phone since she lives in Florida. Wish I could have done it in person, but I just had to tell her. She was THRILLED as she knew that I was trying for several months.

How did I tell my dad and my two older sisters?

Do you remember Michelle and me traveling home in February? Well we planned it to be the time for me to tell the rest of my family the great news. My mom was happy as she was having a hard time keeping it a secret. You did great mom!

Telling my older sister and my niece was first. As our parents were at an event the night we got in, so off to the older sister’s house we went.

sister carrie and joy finding out

I stopped by Babies R Us and bought some baby socks as the hint I was planning on giving to each family member.  At my sister’s house I handed the baby socks to my niece to hand to her mom. As soon as Joy gave Carrie (my older sis) the socks, she knew. She said, “you’re pregnant.”  I nodded, yes. And handed her and Joy my first ultrasound pictures.  My niece did not really understand completely, but I am excited for her to have a cousin to play with soon.

After telling my oldest sister, Michelle and I headed back to the house to see the parents. Time to tell my dad.

We were all sitting on the sofa and I turned to my dad and mom and said, “Are you guys ready to be grandparents again?” My dad had this look on his face, as not sure what to expect. I said I am pregnant. Big smiles. And he said congratulations.

It was so nice to finally share the news with my parents. Up next was my second oldest sister who lives in Orlando. So off we went to help work at the Princess marathon expo.  In the car ride we kept planning out how we were going to tell Jen.  Our plan did not go as planned, but that is okay. After helping them get everything packed up for the expo, we had a few moments with her.

telling sister jen

We wrote out the word BABY out on separate pieces of paper. One with each having a letter on it. So she had to put it together to discover that it spelled baby. It took her a few seconds, but then she got it!

It was so nice to share the news with everyone. Now we can all relax and enjoy my pregnancy 🙂

How did you tell Gary’s parents?

We told Gary’s parents after our second appointment when we got to hear the heartbeat on February 11th. Amazing moment!!  That little thing sure can beat fast.  That evening Gary called his parents to tell them the news. Since he is #3 in his family and his other two older brothers already have kids… it was easy for him to play off that the 3rd son is bringing in the 3rd grandchild. Needless to say his parents were super excited.

We told his brothers after my second ultrasound as we wanted to make sure everything was looking good. And it was!

14 week pregnant progress picture

My thoughts on how was my first trimester went.

How have you been feeling?

Good. I feel bad saying it as I know several women have horrible first trimesters with morning sickness. I was lucky and did not have any symptoms.  The first couple of weeks I was extremely bloated and constipated (which are so much better now). And I would get very minor headaches maybe once or twice a week. I would get some mood swings (nothing too different than I normally would).  Some days I felt like I had extra salvia in month, but again nothing terrible.

But overall I felt great my first trimester. Sometimes I felt like I was not pregnant because I was feeling so normal. I kept telling Gary and Michelle that I feel like I am doing something wrong since I don’t feel bad. It was a weird feeling. But I feel blessed to have been able to really enjoy my first trimester.

After talking with my oldest sister she reassured me that I was doing everything right as she did not have morning sickness either. She had a great pregnancy. So that made me feel better.

What symptoms are you having?

No major symptoms. No back aches yet. No cramping. Sleeping is not the greatest anymore which is hard for me as I used to sleep great. I usually wake up between 4-5am to go pee. I toss and turn a lot. I sleep mostly on left side with sometimes on the right side.

My boobs have stopped really hurting and have grown some. Oh yay! Great benefit for me for being pregnant, I now have boobs. I now fill my bras. It’s a great feeling.

My energy was pretty much the same pre-pregnancy. I was able to stay up late doing work and got up at usual time each morning. Later in the first trimester I would start getting tired in the afternoons.

sleeping jax lori on sofa

Jax loved it when I would lay down as he likes to snuggle with me. I would usually rest for about an hour. This happened probably around the 10 week mark.  Now that I am at 14 weeks, my energy is back to normal. I don’t take naps anymore.

Did you have any weird food cravings?

No. I will be doing a whole post here about what I ate during my first trimester. I had just a few minor cravings that lasted a week or so. Some just a day or two. But nothing too crazy. Sorry I am boring. Overall I was able to maintain my pre-pregnancy diet. I ate pretty much the same, just a few days a week I would crave something different.

Did you take any additional supplements prior to getting pregnant or during first trimester?

Nothing different than my usual supplements. I will be writing a post here soon about food and supplements that I feel helped me so far.  Several of you have written me great questions, and I hope to answer them all.

Are you going to find out if baby is a boy or girl?

Yes! I just have to know 😉  Our next appointment is later this month and we get to find out the sex. Super excited!

What is going to happen with the blog?

Well, like I mentioned in this video things are going to be pretty much the same here on the blog with pregnancy posts tossed into the purely twins mix. We will always share our one free workout routine every Monday, just something we like to give back to you guys for your continued support. And of course if you want to workout with me while I am pregnant you can inside our club 🙂  We will still share a few recipes a week; again, that is our second passion.   And we will continue to share our health and fitness journeys with all of you. And I will be sharing my pregnancy updates every week on Tuesday, sometimes I might do a second post if I have more to share.

So we should have you covered from fitness, to recipes, to pregnancy to health and to happiness. We will continue to learn and grow together to be happy and fit in all parts of life!

How is the baby?

Baby is doing amazing. Growing at the rate he or she is supposed to be growing. Has a great heartbeat. At our second ultrasound the baby was moving all around. It was amazing to see that. And crazy how fast the baby grows!! The doc says everything is looking fantastic!!

How is your skin? Your acne?

I will continue to share updates on my skin as that was a huge concern for me when I got pregnant. How was my skin going to react? I admit I was nervous. Scared that my face would just go crazy again.  And so far my face is doing pretty good. I just get a few small pimples here and there. No cystic acne!! So happy about that.  I will share more about face soon. But for now, I am very happy with how my skin is handling all the hormones from being pregnant.

14 week pregnant update

Now for my 14 week update:

Current food cravings?

Grapefruit. I eat a full one everyday it feels like. As well still loving our almond butter bread just made up more!

Any symptoms?

Toss and turn in my sleep. I’ve been having really weird dreams lately. Random and just plain weird. Sometimes I get tired but not that bad. Overall feeling strong and happy.

 Stretch marks?

No. I have been putting oils on body and planning on getting some DoTerra oils to help skin.

Miss anything?

Nothing yet. Well, a good cup of coffee. Decaf sucks.

How is your skin?

Skin is still doing well. I have one very small pimple on chin, but besides that my skin is holding up. I am still keeping up with my face routine and dealing with scarring, but overall still happy.

How is digestion?

Digestion is great. I take my digestive enzymes before lunch and dinner. Enjoying lots of fermented foods which help. And constipation is getting so much better! I will share more on that soon.  I am still eating the same as before, just sometimes snack a little bit more.  I just eat when I feel hungry.

Total weight gain/loss?

I gained a few pounds the first two weeks, but lately I have been the same weight. I don’t daily track my weight as I don’t even have a scale in the house. I just go by the doctors visits I have about once a month. So really unsure of the total weight.

Well, that is my update.

For other moms out there, what did you like most about your first trimester? How did you tell your family?

When I was pregnant with my first son, I felt great! No sickness at all. With my second son, I was miserable, but I was taking progesterone (my body didn’t make any which is why we lost 2 pregnancies between the boys) and I was sick from start to finish with that pregnancy. In the end, sick or not sick really didn’t matter to me as long as we had healthy babies in the end. I’m just so incredibly happy for you and Gary! This is so exciting. Love seeing that smile and sweet little tiny baby bump! xoxo

I hates the first Tri it was miserable! So happy to be at 14 weeks. I drink one cup of half caff a day, you don’t have to just drink decaf, don’t torture yourself lol!

With both of my pregnancies I casually told my parents and my in-laws. Don’t really remember the best thing about the 1st trimester (my kiddos are now 2 and 5), but did had morning sickness with both . So, I guess finding out that I was pregnant was the best part!

Love seeing pregnancy updates! It is such an exciting time in one’s life!

I have really been enjoying your ladies’ workouts and am excited to start the kettlebell swing challenge today too!

Side note about decaf coffee, I can’t do the caffeine and drink decaf from the brand Cafe Altura (have found it at Sprouts and Natural Grocers, blue can). It has a nice flavor and doesn’t upset my stomach like most other decaf coffees do.

Happy Birthday Month!! Yes, I will be doing the kettle ball swings with you! – just using a dumbbell instead. I’ve never done them, so I am looking forward to trying it out!

Chalk it up to my curious personality, but I enjoy pregnancy updates! Great to hear how it is going for you. My mom had some odd pregnancy issues, but overall everything turned out fine. 🙂

You are so lucky everything is so smooth so far. I’m totally jealous!! I’m 7 weeks today and have been in bed for the past week with the most intense nausea/sickness. Its 24/7 and keeps me up all night. On top of that I have a food adversion to EVERYTHING. I lost 5 lbs in 2 weeks so my doctor put me on something to help ease the suffering (I was reluctant at first but read up on it and it is very safe). No natural remedy helped 🙁 My skin (I have cystic acne already, despite every dietary effort to fix it) and mine is FREAKING OUT 🙁 Hey maybe if old wives tales are true you are in for a boy and I’m in for a girl? My Hcg levels are very high (61000 at 6 weeks) so maybe thats the reason for my suffering. I love your guys’ blog and normal would be making so many of your recipes but its gonna have to wait until I get better. Thanks for sharing your journey!

As I’ve said in previous comments I am exactly at the same point in pregnancy as you with the same due date which is amazing. I had some nausea in the first tri, it wasn’t too bad but it did send me right off plain chicken and salads, which I believe is quite common, oh and coffee, even though I wouldn’t have been drinking it anyways! I find it so exciting that the baby is the size of a lemon, I had a scan at 8 weeks and it looked like a peanut shaped blob, so amazing how much it had changed by the time we had a 12 week scan!
