chocolate hemp grain-free waffle recipe

by purelytwins

Happy Friday luvs!

We made it through another week! Anyone else ready for the weekend? We have a few house things we hope to get done, plus we got our second cookbook done! Just having the family read over it one more time. So hopefully this week we will have more details on it.

Okay now onto WAFFLES!!

Chocolate protein packed waffles to be exact. And they do not have plantains in them. Shocking we know. haha

purely recipe logo-01

gluten free hemp chocolate waffles

A perfect breakfast as they can be tolerated by most as these chocolate waffles are free of gluten, grains, soy, dairy, nuts and eggs!

Today we are sharing another protein waffle recipe with you but this time they are grain-free and CHOCOLATE! Plus they are nut free too unlike our other vegan protein waffle recipe. We love our other waffle recipes, even our plantain “cake” waffles, but these chocolate waffles are topping the list now.

grain free hemp protein chocolate waffles

The perfect excuse to enjoy chocolate at breakfast! Or heck make these chocolate protein waffles for dinner.

So, needless to say, these chocolate hemp waffles are A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.

These waffles have a moist, tender texture with a not too sweet flavor. So have fun with the topping your waffles!

Now they were not overly crispy on the outside. They are more soft-like waffles. We still find them to be delicious without the crisp.

chocolate waffles with bananas

Sliced bananas and yogurt go perfectly with these chocolate hemp protein grain-free waffles.

And of course cacao nibs for a little crunch! Mmmm melt-in-your-mouth waffles.

We added in some cardamom as we love chocolate and cardamom together. Also the psyllium husk really helps with holding the waffles together. We like our waffles sturdy.  And the coconut oil is liquid not solid. If you do not like arrowroot starch you could try using corn starch, potato starch or even tapioca starch. Again using a starch helps with the texture.

Hi, ladies! I’m from Bulgaria and my english is bad, sorry about that. I’m interested in your site. Yours workouts and recepis are great! :)) How can I replace cocont oil and coconut milk? 🙂

purelytwins September 6, 2013 - 10:24 am

hello Iva and welcome to our blog 🙂
you can use any liquid oil to replace the coconut oil like olive oil would be great.
and coconut milk you can replace with any milk or non-dairy milk of choice like almond or hemp milk, or regular whole milk. 🙂 let us know if there is anything else!! HUGS

I’m definitely ready for the weekend too. Okay, I’m officially super excited for all things waffles since I finally found mine after searching for what seemed like forever! They always intimidate me a little for some reason, but I think I could break it out for this recipe!

purelytwins September 6, 2013 - 10:25 am

Brittany they might work as pancakes 😉

Laura @ Mommy Run Fast September 6, 2013 - 10:10 am

I’m not a bit protein powder person, but I recently found a hemp protein (choc) that I love! These look phenomenal… I am always so inspired by your creativity!

Jojo @ RunFastEatLots September 6, 2013 - 11:57 am

Chris September 6, 2013 - 12:03 pm

Repeat: YUM!!!!

Can you replace psyllium husk with Chia meal? If so, the same amount?

purelytwins September 6, 2013 - 4:06 pm

you can try, maybe try doing 1 tablespoon.

Kristin September 6, 2013 - 12:39 pm

These look so yummy! You girls have the best recipes!

I haven’t found a hemp protein powder that I like. Would Perfect Fit protein powder work in this recipe?

purelytwins September 6, 2013 - 4:07 pm

Thanks Kristin 🙂
We think perfect fit protein would work, might turn out a little different but still yummy 🙂

Megan (The Lyons' Share) September 6, 2013 - 1:33 pm

I would like to try these as pancakes like Brittany, since I don’t have a waffle maker! I am about to say something shocking, since I adore chocolate and could eat pounds of it in the afternoon or evening, but I actually don’t love chocolate in the early mornings!! I’ll have to have these for brunch on a weekend :).

purelytwins September 6, 2013 - 4:07 pm

gasp no chocolate in the morning haha
HUGS xoxo

Leila September 6, 2013 - 2:08 pm

I’m a fan of hemp protein but would other protein powders work as well? Like whey? Or what other flours do you think could replace it?

purelytwins September 6, 2013 - 4:08 pm

You can try using other protein powders, they may react differently in the recipe compared to hemp. May have to adjust the liquids if needed. You want a nice moist looking batter 🙂

kris September 6, 2013 - 3:53 pm

I think these chocolate waffles would make a great dessert, especially topped with some of that mint chocolate chip ice cream you posted the other day 🙂

purelytwins September 6, 2013 - 4:09 pm

we thinking the same thing 🙂

Millie September 6, 2013 - 5:57 pm

Nice, now I just need to get a waffle maker 🙂

Sally September 7, 2013 - 8:58 am

Thank you for a non plaintain recipe. I am on a low carb diet and they are restricted.

GiGi Eats Celebrities September 8, 2013 - 9:05 pm

I am not a big chocolate person but………. I could see myself liking these!

federico September 15, 2013 - 6:24 pm

Should the batter have the same consistency of a normal waffle batter? Mine was pudding like, very thick and it held the shape. Instead of pour it, I had to scoop and spread it on the pan.

purelytwins September 15, 2013 - 7:27 pm

the batter is a little on the thick side, not a normal waffle batter.

Taylor September 17, 2013 - 10:25 pm

Love waffles <3. I will try these this weekend with flax or chia instead of the psyllium. I'll let you know how they turn out! xo

Christina January 31, 2014 - 1:32 pm

Did flax or chia work out well?

purelytwins February 3, 2014 - 3:26 pm

Christina you can use 1 tbsp flax or chia meal instead of the husk.

Susy September 26, 2013 - 6:05 pm

I made these two days in a row, because they are THAT good. When i was mixing the ingredients, i thought it was the weirdest thing i’ve ever made…but they turn out SO GOOD! specially if you put maple syrup on them…wow. yumm. Thank you!

purelytwins September 26, 2013 - 6:13 pm

haha awesome Susy!! glad you are enjoying the waffles.

Jennifer Houser October 17, 2013 - 8:14 am

Hello! Thank you for the recipe, could I use more banana or apple sauce in place of the coconut oil?

purelytwins October 17, 2013 - 8:39 am

Sure you can try that 🙂

Hayley July 3, 2014 - 5:58 pm

Could you please put your old recipe back up! With the banana puree and psyllium.

It’s so much nicer than the one with flax and also cooks better – I’m finding the flax one breaks apart when I open the waffle iron and splits the waffle in two!
