it’s confirmed I have…

by purelytwins

Good morning friends!

Well, it’s confirmed I (Lori) have… PCOS. Yep.  (Michelle probably has it too since we tend to have the same health issues).

I kinda knew that I did from having so many of the symptoms and many readers have brought it to my attention over the past few months. I got the test done with my OB/GYN doctor and yesterday it was confirmed.

So I am diving into more books, articles, etc about PCOS to continue my journey to heal myself through food and exercise. I have never really talked much about pregnancy here on the blog. I am not pregnant but it has been something I have been thinking about the past few months. So having PCOS and not really having a regular period yet will complicate things, but I am determined to get healed (along with my other skin issues). I will keep everyone updated.

Late afternoon we practiced some new purely fit life workouts and some client workouts.  We have a few tough workouts coming your way. Of course they are fun 😉

loris eggs breakfast

My breakfast

michelles banana bowl

Michelle’s breakfast bowl.

We both enjoyed a banana with 1/2 avocado with 2 eggs, some cooked swiss chard, and coconut oil.

lori table

Filmed our first Q&A video while enjoyed lunch.

Lunch was salmon, carrots, 1/2 avocado, and plantain fries with coconut oil.

post workout meal

Dinner was white rice (cooked in bone broth), dulse flakes, sauteed spinach, ghee and coconut oil, zucchini and baked cod.

carobmuf

Made a simple carob muffin for later in the evening to enjoy since we ate our dinner a little early. Carob muffin was just one egg mixed with 1 tbsp carob, 1/2 scoop perfect fit protein powder, and 1 tbsp coconut oil. Done in the microwave for about 1 minute. You could do in the oven, we were just lazy.

We are both still very positive and happy with where we are in our lives in terms of health. Yes we have issues. But don’t we all? And life will continue to bring us challenges, so we are taking one day at time. Thanks for always sticking around with us!

awww i’m sorry to hear that lori! one of my best friends has it and she was on medication and did fertility drugs to get pregnant but eventually gave birth to a perfect little boy. that would definitely explain the hormone issues/skin stuff. best of luck to you ! xo

thank you Melissa!!! this gives me hope 🙂

I’m so sorry loves! My sis was diagnosed with pcos this past year. I’m going to send we your blog so she can see what you are doing. Lots of love always!!

thanks Lauren!! looking forward in connecting with her!

Maureen May 23, 2013 - 11:03 am

I was diagnosed with PCOS about 6 years ago. It’s definitely not a fun thing to figure out because almost every case of PCOS is different. I am dedicating part of my summer to trying new things to handle my PCOS. Good luck & contact me if you ever need someone to talk to. 🙂

purelytwins May 23, 2013 - 4:13 pm

thanks Maureen! good luck with your journey as well HUGS

Kat May 23, 2013 - 11:06 am

I’m definitely not an expert but taking birth control (we all have at some point in our lives) for an extended amount of time does something horribly wrong to our endocrine system/ hormonal balance. A common medical remedy is birth control for pcos but I’m convinced that is the cause to begin with (along with other factors of course).
Thanks again for sharing all of this personal stuff, you both are definitely an inspiration.

Eimear Rose May 23, 2013 - 2:24 pm

Kat, I was going to say the same thing. Pretty much everyone I know who has PCOS was on the pill before they had symptoms. I think I had a really lucky escape, I was messed up for a long time but got my regular cycle back eventually. Not everyone is as lucky. You will work it out Lori- and just because you have PCOS doesn’t mean you won’t be able to have a normal healthy pregnancy. Every case is different as someone else has already said.

purelytwins May 23, 2013 - 2:35 pm

thanks girl!!! HUGS

Mia May 23, 2013 - 4:14 pm

hello there! Kat I am not so sure about this, in fact i am very skeptical. I had PCOS, diagnosed at 17 years old and had never taken birth control medication of any sort. I had skin issues, period issues and hormones all over the place. After treatment, which included the pill yes, I became fine, and still am 13 years after.
I am still on the pill, and when i try to change it my hormones go wacky. I am still on it because it works.
Btw, having PCOS does not mean infertility. Yes,perhaps you might have had this condition for a long time but that does not mean you cannot heal nor it means you cannot have perfectly healthy normal pregnancies and babies.
So anyway, this was to say that I am don’t believe that birth control is a cause of PCOS, at all. our generation pills are very controlled and the amounts of hormones in them are quite low compared to first generation pills. They don’t do anything “horribly wrong” to our systems. Ok, yes it is something artificial but that doesn’t mean anything on its own. Prosthesis are also artificial… Just had to contest this idea.

purelytwins May 23, 2013 - 4:22 pm

thanks Mia for sharing your side 🙂 glad that you figured a plan that is working for you.
I believe that being on birth control for so long did help in me getting PCOS, I do not think it was the only thing that caused it. As I am learning the body is very complicated and looking at my past i know my other eating, dieting, and lifestyle also played a role in getting PCOS in some way.

Julie July 10, 2013 - 6:42 pm

So far there is no clinical proven cause of PCOS. So does BCP have an effect on PCOS? We don’t know. What we do know is that BCP uses the same hormone replacement (HRT) drugs that women are given after menopause that had such horrific results in a clinical trial by the Women’s health Initiative that they stopped mid trial, and most doctors stopped reccomending it to their patients. I stopped using BCP (and am now horrified that I ever did) instead I started using Bioidentical progesterone cream under the guidance of a knowledged doctor. I have been using it for over 1/2 yr now and feel it’s helped a ton. As for fertility PCOS does affect fertility (because some cycles you do not ovulate), but yes that doesn’t mean that you can’t get pregnant or have a normal pregnancy but it might be harder than you’d expect if you have PCOS.

Crysta May 23, 2013 - 11:10 am

I have PCOS also, are you sure you don’t have a long lost triplet? LOL I swear I struggle with just about everything you discuss here on the blog. Acne, hormones, food allergies/sensitivies, etc. Thanks for reaching out and sharing such personal info, because there really are women out there with the very same issues. We have 4 kids, and though it wasn’t the best/easiest journey to get them here…it was totally worth it!! Good Luck and please share what you learn and are going to try for PCOS. 🙂

Angele May 23, 2013 - 12:05 pm

Crysta I’m just wondering how you were able to overcome it and have children? 🙂

Angele May 23, 2013 - 12:04 pm

Make that long lost quadruplet!!! I have so many issues identical to yours girls.. digestion, hormones, sensitivities you name it. I have just found out from a coworker about the diagnosis for PCOS and what it means.. just this week actually so I am totally floored that you are posting about it today!
I am trying to get myself back to ovulating since coming off birth control a year and a half ago.. so far my OBGYN has attributed it to hypothalamic amennorhea but we haven’t had any success getting me back on track. And it’s frustrating because I do lead a very active lifestyle, eat clean, etc. I often feel like, what else could I do? And then I was introduced to PCOS which I cant wait to discuss with my dr. My coworker was prescribed metformin which worked for her.. I am also in the process of researching diagnosis and solutions. Please keep us posted on here 🙂

Also, LOVE that you share your personal issues, every little bit, and your food intake and such. I look forward to checking your blog on a daily basis. Keep on doing what you do, you have no idea how many people can relate 🙂

Eimear Rose May 23, 2013 - 2:27 pm

Angele, my period only came back off the pill when I stopped working out a lot for a few months, and eating less ‘clean’, i.e. more carbs, tons of fruit, and regular good quality ice-cream. I would definitely recommend taking a break from working out to combat hypothalamic amenorrhea.

purelytwins May 23, 2013 - 4:14 pm

Eimear so happy that those things especially ice cream 😉 helped you 🙂 Love hearing what worked for others!!

Angèle May 23, 2013 - 8:23 pm

Eimear, ive actually done that.. I slacked off for four months on the fitness, coincided with having a running injury but I figured I’d let go and focus on fats etc as I had read about that curing others in the past too.. Unfortunately that didnt trigger my irregular low estrogen levels or ovulation, or anything at all. I’m glad it did work for you though:) still a work in progress here!

Crystal May 23, 2013 - 12:12 pm

Have you heard of the book, “The Infertility Cure” by Randine Lewis? It is all about curing fertility issues through Chinese Medicine, and is worth the read! There is a whole chapter dedicated to PCOS and natural remedies. I have hormone issues as well and unexplained infertility, and it is so frustrating trying to figure out what’s going on with my body, so I completely understand. Since we’ve tried fertility treatments and they did not work and are going on 3 years TTC, I figured natural treatment is worth a shot. Good luck to you!

purelytwins May 23, 2013 - 4:14 pm

Thanks Crystal, I will look into that book!!

Morgan C May 23, 2013 - 12:39 pm

PCOS is one of the things that jumped out at me when I read about it for medical school. I have the hormonal acne and secondary amenorrhea, but really none of the other symptoms. Most of the time it occurs in overweight women (which obviously you are not), but that’s what we’re taught, so it may be overlooked by doctors, especially in thin, fit women. I first thought I was being paranoid because us medical students tend to think we have every disease we read about but now I’m really thinking that I should be tested.

purelytwins May 23, 2013 - 4:15 pm

being tested just helped put my mind at ease, now I can focusing on healing 🙂
HUGS

Morgan C May 23, 2013 - 4:44 pm

It seems that a diagnosis can be made mostly clinically, and I’ve done that already myself based on what I found on UpToDate (a medical journal resource). I have already been prescribed birth control, but I am reluctant to use it as I have been on birth control for 10 years. I was thinking of trying Saw Palmetto (something traditionally used to treat enlarged prostate (BPH) in old men. That seems odd, but it’s the same androgenic hormones that are responsible for things like acne. I’m already eating paleo, but I have been for a while and I haven’t seen much change. I have also been extra stressed lately (step one board exams) and I feel like that makes symptoms worse.

What tests did your doctor do?

By the way, thank you for sharing your story. Hugs 🙂

Eating 4 Balance May 23, 2013 - 12:43 pm

Sorry to hear of yet another problem that you must overcome! At the same time though, I always think that a diagnosis is better than being left in the doctor. A diagnosis is something that you can work with 🙂 On the next steps then I guess! Interested to hear how this affects what you do with diet/exercise/supplements/etc. as I, like many other previous commenters have already said, am experiencing basically the same symptoms as you. Can’t wait to read more about what you discover!

I have PCOS too. If I’ve learned anything (about PCOS and EVERY other health problem) is that no matter what anyone tells you, there is no single approach that works for everyone! But you girls are pros at experimentation, so I know you will find what works best for you. <3

purelytwins May 23, 2013 - 4:16 pm

sorry girl to hear that you have it too. and yes everyone will be different, I am curious what is going to help me 😉

Erica May 23, 2013 - 1:25 pm

I have PCOS as well; I was diagnosed several years ago when I was a having trouble getting pregnant. The first thing my ob/gyn did was put me on clomid and send me to a fertility specialist. After 6 mo., the clomid had no effect and soon after I stopped seeing the specialist. I just had a feeling that their drugs and approach would not work as it was only masking the problem and treating the symptoms. I eventually went to an acupuncturist that specializes in fertility. He enlighted me about PCOS and the different types. You probably have the same type as me, which is “thin” type and is unfortunately harder to pregnant. I changed my diet and got regular treatment which regulated my cycles. Soon after I got pregnant with my first child. The pregnancy, delivery and baby boy were all perfect! Afterwards, I kept my eating habits the same but did not continue the acupuncture. I tried to pregnant 2 years later and within a year I got pregnant again at the age of 34. Again – another perfect pregnancy, delivery and baby. Both of my baby boys were full term, born on their due date and they were both the same exact weight and length! Lol. My point is that you are already ahead of the curve by being so healthy, with the help of acupuncture you should have no problem! I truly believe the acupuncture and my diet, which is actually a lifestyle, got me pregnant. Stay positive and keep up the good work! Btw – I love your blog and all the great workout tips from you and your sister. Thanks for all your inspiration and great information!

I have PCOS as well (I am 23). My period has been absent for most of the past three years. I can relate to many of the twins’ health issues, but also have different issues. However, I think Michelle and Lori are doing a great job in keeping themselves nourished and putting a lot of effort into a healthy lifestyle. Don’t despair!!

I’ve been reading your blog for a while now, I was diagnosed with PCOS last year after losing my period, getting acne, and gaining weight. When you sometimes mentioned your similar issues (minus the weight!) the thought ran across my mind that you could be suffering from something similar, but what do I know 🙂
Honestly, from months and months of research and after many specialists, and “ripping off” the proverbial bandaid of just using birth control to control things, after I switched to a lower carb diet free from grains and dairy, and after I started getting my butt into gear and getting back into shape after a hiatus, things really have improved! I think you guys are ahead in the game, doing an amazing job and inspiring the rest of us along your journey. This inspires me even more to not give up on any given “bad” day and make it through that workout I don’t feel like doing. Like others have stated, because pcos is so complex and unique to each person, it really takes experimentation to get the right “formula” for each of us! I’ve been experimenting with maca, evening primrose, and taking magnesium/calcium in order to see what happens. Only time will tell what will happen to us 🙂 I’ve really relied on a loosely based pale diet and this blog has quite a lot of good info, she also suffers from pcos: http://www.paleoforwomen.com
I wish you the best of luck on this journey we share and thanks for being the inspiration that you are for the rest of us!
Thanks 🙂

I am sorry to hear that you were diagnosed with PCOS! I have been wondering if I have it, and can’t wait to hear what you learn! So much of the information on PCOS seems to be about those in the overweight category, and I am at a normal weight so I don’t really know what to do!?

Thank you for keeping your blog up-to-date!

I’m sorry to hear that you have to deal with the pain of PCOS–but at least you have a diagnosis. Sometimes, when you have a name for things, it’s easier to deal with (and to figure out how to treat it).

I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2007, and I’ve dealt with what seems to be hypothalamic amenorrhea (maybe?) for the last year. I found that reading Stefani Ruper’s ebook, PCOS Unlocked, was really helpful in understanding the mechanisms a little bit better: http://bit.ly/10obfnl.

Stefani’s got a TON of great, free info on her site, paleoforwomen.com, if you haven’t visited it yet.

Now that you have some answers, I hope that it helps you on your journey to healing!

Shel May 23, 2013 - 10:49 pm

Have u had ur mthfr status checked? It’s a simple blood test, but it can play a role in methylation, which affects every bodily process, even hormones. It really affects ones ability to get pregnant and have a healthy baby. Also, the 23andme test can show other genetic errors that can predispose u to hormonal issues gut problems, and other stuff. I highly recommend it. I can tell u more if u want to email me

I’ve had amenorrhea since age 13. I had early menarche at age 11 and dysmenorrhea for 2 yrs until they stopped completely. I tried bcp 3x to restart my cycle, but the side effects were bad. I’m sure I have pcos but it had never been officially dx’d. I’ve also had ovarian cysts, so I’m assuming I have it lol.

What test did u do to dx it?

Some supps that can help with estrogen dominance (even if ur estrogen is low, the ratio of estrogen to progesterone can be of, causing estrogen dom) :
-calcium d glucerate helps to sop up excess estrogen and is low sulfur
-myomin is a Chinese herb that does the same and help balance other hormones
-dim helps balance estrogen, but is high sulfur

Hope this helps

I’m sorry to hear ladies! I have no doubt that you will work through this and find your own healing journey. Hugs from afar. x

Jay May 24, 2013 - 6:15 am

How did you get the diagnosis? Wrong diagnosis regarding PCOS are very common and in your case it sounds more like hypothalammic ammenorrhea due to your restrictive eating and overexercising (and consequently very low body fat).

Please, read the comments on this here: http://www.juliegolean.com/2012/11/hard-but-true.html?showComment=1353512797596#c2575206664507241892

Lori- just wanted to say I’m thinking of you. I had a lot of trouble getting pregnant with my daughter. I have polycystic-like ovaries, but not full flown pcos… very similar. I was able to get pregnant naturally, through diet, acupuncture, etc. But it was a very emotionally draining process, probably the hardest thing I’ve ever gone through because it’s so out of your control and extremely frustrating. I’m happy to listen anytime if you need to vent. So glad you know the issue and can start working toward resolution immediately. Hugs!

Hey girls.

Just some food for thought…
My good friend was told over and over that she had PCOS, but it turned out that what she actually had was hypothalamic amenorrhea as a result of dieting and over-exercising. She too was worried about getting pregnant…but eventually she made it happen through natural means! There’s always a way to make things right. Good luck on your journey <3

purelytwins May 24, 2013 - 2:22 pm

yes we have been reading more about hypothalamic amenorrhea and we think that might be our issue. so interesting how just now reading about all this after all these years haha. Glad your friend was able to get pregnant!! HGUS

Aw, Lori I’m sorry about the diagnosis, but at least you have the information you’ve been wanting now! I know you are so strong and you have all the will to overcome this! It must be a bit of a relief to have answers regarding your hormones, and it would also explain the skin issues too. I know you’ll come out of this much stronger and I bet it will be nice for people to read about your journey, because I know a lot of people struggle with this issue. You girls will help so many people and I hope this helps with your healing journey <3 love you ladies! xo

Juliana May 24, 2013 - 7:17 pm

I’ve followed your blog for awhile and had to comment when I read this. Several years ago I was diagnosed with PCOS after a BATTERY of tests at the Mayo Clinic (like you, I’m thin, though I’m much more sedentary, have dealt with horrible acne and irregular periods).

It’s definitely scary when they first throw the diagnosis at you, especially when they start rattling off the symptoms. Though they did recommend birth control, I ultimately decided to approach things holistically. Though it was certainly a challenge, especially approaching something unconventionally, I learned A LOT. In my very rudimentary observation of PCOS, I’ve come to conclude that it’s more a generalized term that the medical community uses for a number of symptoms that can be caused by any number of issues which is why it seems to manifest differently for different people (the same way you can catch a cold in any number of different ways). But I have no medical background, so PLEASE feel free to take my opinion with a grain of salt. 😉

However, what helped ME was watching my blood sugar (as PCOS is linked to insulin resistance), making sure I get enough minerals/electrolytes to stay hydrated and using certain supplements, such as D-Chiro-Inositol and (natural) progesterone (which I took BRIEFLY as I didn’t want to get my body dependent on hormone replacement therapy). I also worked with a Bio-Set practitioner which was extremely helpful (it’s sort of a breath work/acupressure system mostly used to treat food allergies and, though it may seem a little “woo woo” to some people, it worked for me and everyone I recommended it to). My periods are now pretty much regular, my moods much more balanced and my skin much clearer – so about 99% better, but still a work in progress – though, isn’t that always the case? ;D

As the other extremely intelligent women who have commented before me have said, EVERYONE is different. Figure out what works for you and, if something doesn’t, don’t beat yourself up! (I’m still working on that one, lol.) Everybody and every BODY is unique, as you’ve clearly experienced with your own journey that you’ve so generously shared with us here, so just take the time to figure out what’s right for you. And as you do, no matter what path you take (traditional/holistic/etc), I hope you discover what I did – the amazing chance you’ve been given to learn more about yourself, about how strong you are and about what being a woman means to you. 🙂

michelle May 24, 2013 - 7:38 pm

LAdies,

I also have PCOS. I won’t go into all details as I have suspect you two take your own initiative in research. In combination with a healthy diet and a basis of Chinese medicine from dragon herbs….

Two supplements that saved my life:

EstroBlock (broccoli extract – indol-3-carbinol)- preventing any further development of the syndrome. Within weeks of taking it you can measure the change in your hormone levels.
Nascent Iodine – the only substance known to dissolve cysts.

A true miracle.
Best and warmest wishes.

Hey, I would read and research anything that Alisa Vitti has written. She had PCOS and healed herself with food…no drugs. She has also just published a book called Woman Code. I have learned a lot in that book such as how different food and exercises at different times in your cycle can help support it. I hope you find something that works:-) here is her website:http://floliving.com

Sonya May 27, 2013 - 10:20 am

I am now 8 months pregnant but before I started trying I realized my cycles were like 45 days apart and sometimes longer. A lot was going on in my life at the time so I didn’t start paying attention until I realized I was ready for a baby. At the time, I was exercising too much, doing same exercises you guys do, short HIIT type and toning circuits. The more I looked into this I realized Hypothalamic Amenorrhea (HA) was a real problem with people that exercised like I did. I cut back on those type of workouts and did more gentle yoga and walking. I used fertilityfriend.com and FemCalLite app on my phone to track my cycles. Within two months, I brought my cycle from 45 days to 32 and was pregnant by the 2nd month. Another thing that helped me was listening to Walter Makitchen podcasts on conception and using his meditation and visualization, he has a wonderful book too called, Spirit Babies that I recommend. It’s amazing how you spend most of your life trying not to get pregnant then when you are ready you realize it’s not as easy as you thought, good luck!

I’ve suffered for the last 10 years with every side effect that you could imagine with PCOS.  Little did I know, that I have an underactive Thyroid that may have caused PCOS to begin with.
Most doctors will not check your Thyroid because they have already diagnosed you with PCOS. Now I have an under active Thyroid and they both have almost the  same symtoms. Mind blowing! Some researches say that there’s a link between the two because an underactive Thyroid will cause enlarged ovaries that can also cause ovarian cysts.
With all my research with PCOS and treatments, I’ve never seen any one mention the thyroid. Which your Tyroid controls almost almost everything in your body.
Now I suffer from cycst acne on my face,  hips and thighs. Every doctor and multiple specialist always thought  that it was strange to have acne on my thighs.  Well ding, ding, ding! Pcos, underactive and problems with your GI tract will cause acne over some parts or all parts of your body.
I’m order to cure your acne, you would FIRST have to treat your thyroid (NO matter what products you use, you acne will not clear up) constipation (GEO or IBS) and/or any bacterial paraistites that you may of gotten through this obstical through out your life.
You have to treat your skin internally by finding the “root” of your health issues. PCOS is a syndrome, NOT a disease.  You have to find out what caused that  PCOS SYNDROME.  It may be diabeties, an auto immiune disease and/or a diginoses with your Tyroid.   Or even all those listed above combined.
I am not a doctor, nor do I work in the health field.

Now with my experience, I’m trying to save other the time, money and mostly the suffering through this vicious cycle.

Please save yourself the trouble and just have your thyroid hormone, diabetes and your T3 and T4 levels tested. Regardless of age. I’m only 26 years old and wish that I would of had those tests done YEARS ago!!!!
