how much carbs to eat?

Yesterday our morning workout was from the Tone it Up girls – we did their Easter bunny workout. Loved it.




After the workout it was green juice time. We ended up putting a little too much fresh ginger in the juice so it definitely had a kick to it.


Later it was time for some eggs, arugula, and sweet potatoes. Along with some coconut oil.


We ended up doing a second workout yesterday – as we filmed our new purely fit life workout for this coming Monday. For this post-workout meal we made up a egg perfect fit protein large pancake topped with half banana, bee pollen and a few cashews. And came back later to eat another egg with some broccoli and coconut oil. Weird but yummy.


Dinner was some grilled salmon, steamed cauliflower, sautéed swiss chard, sardine, sauerkraut, spiralized yellow squash and half avocado.

Both of us got extremely full and got the bloated belly after dinner. It has been a really long time since we have had that happen to us.  We have a few different ideas of why this may have happened. Maybe it was too many different things to eat at one meal. Or from the increase in magnesium we are taking. Or from too many veggies (in terms of the fiber).

We have been doing a lot of research lately on fiber and veggies in terms of helping and hurting constipation. We will discuss that further in another post soon, as we are just now going to play around with different things.

And we are still trying to figure out our carbs. How much carbs can our bodies handle?

All last week we both ate more ‘carbs’ in forms of either sweet potatoes or bananas. And yesterday we ate both a banana and sweet potato in one day. Michelle’s skin is still doing well, but still struggling with itchy skin on her legs. My (Lori)skin is not doing so well. I got a few new big pimples on my chin and one on my left cheek. Plus my back acne is still the same (sometimes I feel it is getting worse as it has been like this for months now, so embarrassing).

Now these new breakouts for me could be from the addition of carbs (and sugar from the sweet potatoes/bananas). Maybe my body is just adjusting to the change and eventually it will all settle out. Again only time will tell. Michelle and I both still plan on keeping some form of ‘starchy’ carb in our diet but just figuring out how much can our bodies handle. Remember everyone’s body is different so everyone’s level of ability to handle carbs will vary.

We just wanted to share that we are still having some health issues that we are trying to get to the bottom of. We are staying positive about it all and know that over time we will figure out our bodies. As change does take time 🙂

Twins question: Do you do high or low carb days? Or do you feel you keep your carb intake pretty much the same everyday? What is your favorite carb?

I just have to say that I love you blog and your recipes!! You guys are so great at sharing your health progress and chalenges. Have you considered you acne being caused by your body detoxing? If this is the case, I would suggest getting a colonic done to help with the progress. Keep up the good work girls!! Best to you

Hey lovely ladies! I the bloating could be caused by the banana/cashew combo. A few things I am realizing with myself is that fruit (especially starchy like nana) should be consumed alone, in small quantities and earlier in the day. Just my two cents. I think you gals are spot on too – less is more in terms of optimal digestion. I too have extremely sensitive skin. There are foods that constantly cause me to get hives, acne, and rashes – extremely frustrating when you are not certain what they are. I believe cashews are a contributor – they are moldy after all. Being prone to constipation is what brought me to a high fruit diet which i maintained for years (which has it’s pros), but also caused issues/concerns. I have to say chia has changed my life — I sound so dramatic, hehe. It has helped my BMs’ so much, my hair and skin. I LOVE LOVE LOVE it! Anyways, keep it up gals – you are doing great 🙂 Sending love and positive energy xxo
Another thing I should mention is that when I soak a nut/seed and make a raw/germinated mylk, and have that in small quantities I seem to be ok, as long as I don’t over-do it!

thanks Amanda! you are so right about it all. we have to remember that when we eat fruit it needs to be along and/or in the morning, we know better 😉
and yes we seem to like chia seeds too, maybe we should try making sure we have them everyday to see how we do!

I do at least 2 TBS in hemp mylk or germinated almond mylk, and make a puddin' or a chia bubble mylk. The chia helps so much. Sharing helps us learn.

Also, I prefer having a tart green juice with green apply – it is sooo good. Maybe to rotate from the carrots…they may be higher in sugar/starch? I’m not sure…
Anyways, thought you lovelies may like to try this juice; 1-2 green apples, 1-2 celery stalks, nob of ginger, 1/2-3/4 of a lemon or lime, handful of greens (parsley, kale – the darker guys), few lettuce leaves, and I think that’s it. It’s delicious and the green apples are extremely low in sugar and non-starchy. xxx

I love sweet potatoes. I find I am able to handle carbs best at night. However, I am trying to find the right balance for during the day, especially in the afternoon hours. I often find I am at either extreme: too many makes me feel sick, bloated, and little digested but too few gives the spacey feeling.

we thought about trying carbs at night to see how we do, kinda change our breakfast to be dinner and dinner to be breakfast to see the difference. something we are thinking about.

Your dinner looks delish!! I’m actually not big on carbs, but sweet potato would probably be my favorite. Sweet potato wedges = favorite.

I pretty much keep the amount of carbs I eat the same. Regularly they are oats, vegetables, beans and apples with the addition of quinoa, potatoes, brown rice or kabocha as the rotational carbs. It is definitely all trial and error when it comes to finding what works for you. Adding foods back in is definitely the scary part though. Hormones don’t help either since they throw everything for a curveball. 🙂

Since I do a long training run (16-22 miles) once a week, I increase my carb intake for a day or two before that run to up my glycogen stores. I try to keep it as gluten free as possible, eating lots of homemade sushi with yams and avocado. It sometimes ends in some bloating, which is frustrating but then I go back to focusing on fats and protein for the days following the run and I’m better.

it’s funny i’ve been trying to figure out the same thing… I am obsessed, as obsessed as you can be with sweet potato, I love a big baked sweet potato with avocado and nutritional yeast mushed in it, I have one every day. Other than my sweet potato I get my other carbs from veggies, some people have told me I eat too many carbs because of the sweet potato, others say not enough… its quite confusing. I look forward to seeing what you guys do as it may give me some other ideas, keep on keeping on 🙂 thanks!

right now we only have them post-workout so we can’t really say, as we never had carbs before our workouts…. maybe we should experiment 😉

U had mentioned that fructose might be an issue… Sweet potatoes have fructose. Perhaps try doing white potatoes? They are less likely to ferment in the gut due to the type of starch they contain and also the fact they have no fructose

Also, have u thought of the possibility of reacting to foods high in thiols/sulfur? These can aggravate skin issue. As well as candida problems. Foods like crucifers, ssauerkraut, some meats, eggs, etc can be a big culprit

A long time ago, I did the Atkins diet. While it was quite restrictive, I remember feeling really good. No grains, no sugar [no chocolate…ack!], in the beginning no fruit and not many carbs–certainly no alcohol 🙁 . I think we were allowed 2 cups of lettuce a day, and some veggies. I wasn’t sluggish or tired. Had great energy. Makes me want to do it again, only tweak it. Better quality meat, not restrict fruit. There’s so much more info out there now that there was back then. ~~~ My favorite carbs are and apple sprinkled with cinnamon & cardamom and grilled vegetables.

I am really struggling with balancing carbs too. I’m trying to cut way back on grains as well… it’s not easy! Lori, I am still dealing with breakouts as well, you know that I completely understand what you’re going through! It is so incredibly hard to figure out the culprit. I have no answers, but I am right here with you and love the both of you!

Have you been still taking the HCL before your meals? I was having TERRIBLE bloating after eating anything, and ever since I started being diligent with my HCL (I found that I need 4 before a protein-heavy meal, 3 before a meal lighter in protein) the bloating has completely gone away, my digestion is better than ever, and I just feel amazing overall. I know how frustrating it can be. If I were you, I would keep up with increasing your carb intake with starchy vegetables and fruit. Your body needs them, especially if you’re working out. Love you both! xo

we were good about taking the HCL and now getting back to being diligent with it too, so we know that probably has something to do with it. We usually take 2 pills, so now we plan to increase to 3-4 pills now to see how we do 🙂 HUGS

What is the weather like where you ladies are? I suspect the itchy legs is most likely from dry skin…I get that in the cold months…or when the air is very dry…

I also started breaking out recently…and come to think about it…I have been eating more carbs than I normally do…I usually do not get very many pimples…but in the last week I have had four large pimples…two on my left cheek…and two on my chin…

very interesting Nelly about your pimples. hopefully you can figure out why it happens, as I know how frustrating they can be. I have no idea why I got my recent breakout – maybe from the carbs or maybe from stress or maybe just from changing things up again and body taking time to get used to it. so many factors. yes we definitely think it is dry skin but how bad the itch is and the red patches it leaves behind is what concerns us.

I get that too…the crazy itch, and the red patches…I just make sure to moisturize A LOT. And I also put aloe on my dry patchy skin…and it seems to work. Something to think about and for some relief.

I’ve been following you guys sporadically for a while, but I’m anxiously awaiting a breakthrough in your search for a dietary acne cure. I have struggled with acne for as long as I can remember. Generally the only time I get any relief is when I go on a form of hormonal birth control. I have tried so many in the past 10 years and recently have no tolerance to them (I get really moody and irritable) so I have been trying to cure it with diet.

I get pimples on my chin mostly, and occasionally on my cheeks, but the painful back acne is killing me. I had to wear my hair down on my wedding day last week because it was so bad. I hoped that tanning would work, being that it is sort of antibacterial and useful for short-term relief, but it didn’t. I even got a back facial. I understand how frustrating it can be, it really can kill your self-esteem and confidence. I especially get frustrated when people with horrible diets have beautiful skin.

I have been eating paleo for months now, I’ve done a zone version (40-30-30), and I’ve also done lower carb (something like 20-30-50). Neither seemed to make a difference. My next step is actually getting hormonal tests done, have you guys ever had any tests like that done?

yes we got hormones tested a few years ago, we need to go and do it again here soon to see how we are doing!

Also, I wanted to add that I get really bloated if I eat too much broccoli (especially raw), cauliflower, or cabbage. I think someone else mentioned the fructose. These are among the FODMAPs that some people have a problem with.

I love your eats! And I have the same reaction when I eat too many veggies in one meal that are cruciferous like cauliflower, broccoli etc. They tend to be hard to digest and can make you bloated/gassy. Don’t you just love how you eat healthy and your body has a hard time digesting it? 🙂 Thanks for inspiring me to continue in my healthy eats and fitness!

I only eat them immediately after a workout otherwise I have none for digestive reasons.. Also….have you tried removing the protein powder? I was consuming a serving or two a day of organic whey protein powder and found that removing it cleared my skin. It took about three months to see a real difference.

Just recently figured out that any beans make my skin breakout. So crazy! I’ve tested my theory 6 or 7 times now… (i had been reading Dr Fuhrman’s books and thought I’d try adding beans to my diet. on to the next plan!). thanks so much for always sharing your discoveries with us!

Hey girls! I find the carb balance to be tough at times because I know my body runs better on a low carb/high protein/high fat diet. But you know how much I love sweets! My skin is good but if I eat too much cacao or too many sweets, I break out a bit. I also find that if I have too many carbs along with high protein/fat, I will get very bloated and gassy 🙁 And by “to many carbs” I mean too many berries, banana, or too much plain yogurt still has high carbs, sweet potato, etc. It sucks to be so sensitive.

Wondering what blood type you are and if you have ever tried eating 4 your blood type. I have been doing this since 2005 and I have lost 170 and was able to get off of oxygen which I was on 24/7, I was able to go from being in a wheel chair to a walker to a cane and than walking on my own, except when snow is on grown (use for my own security of not falling. I went from IBS to normal bowel movements (long brown soft stools) I am an O+ gatherer and went from blood type diet to genotype diet and now to a personal diet called swamiX which takes my health, my parents,siblings and grand parents health and ethnic and genetic background into consideration and understand when done by younger people it will improve the genetic health of future generations.
