Day 18 interesting reads about fructose malabsorption, hormonal acne, the gut

by purelytwins

Remember this ourย plan to heal our gut.ย Consult your doctor before beginning any program. Adjust to your own body and needs. We have done our own research and have come to these steps to help us in ourย journey to heal our stomach issues. Please do your own research before starting anything new. We are not really sure how long we plan to do this program. And over time we might be changing things depending on how our bodies are doing. We plan to share just about everything as we heal, so we apologize now if some things are TMI. We want to be honest as we are using our blog as our journal.

Hello everyone! Thanks for the sweet words about Michelle running in the Tinker Bell Half Marathon, I am so proud of her and I know she is proud of herself (and ready to get home).

And we wanted to say welcome new readers!! You may have already figured out that we are on a journey to heal some of our health issues to help make us strong and healthy in the future. We have been receiving a lot of questions about why we are doing certain things and not doing certain things, so we will work on another Q&A video here soon (you can check out first Q&A video here). If you have any specific questions for us make sure to leave a comment and we will address it. Thanks! ๐Ÿ™‚

We love reading and learning new things all the time. We feel the more knowledge you have the better you are to make ‘wiser’ decisions. And remember it is ok that your eats may be different than someone else. We don’t feel there is a perfect way to eat for everyone to follow as everyone is different. We keep an open mind about everything health, food, and fitness related.

Here are some interesting articles that we have been reading that has us thinking differently about what to eat and what not to eat.

ย We have some ideas to discuss with each other a little more than we will share here on the blog our thoughts.

Gut Sense about constipation and all so much more –> really interesting site and thinking of getting the book as it is really making us look at our ‘diet’ differently

Chris Kresser has some interesting reads as well

issue-with-fructose

Primal parent has sooo many interesting articles on her site especially this one about fructose malabsorption which a lovely reader shared with us.

fodmap-diet

Some FODmaps information that is interesting as well, Kate has some interesting reads on the basics of FODmaps

And Paleo for Women about hormonal acne again a blog reader shared with us.

And of course we get a lot of information from Mark’s Daily Apple like advice for acne suffersย ย and ways to reduce inflammationย , we could be on his site for hours if we had the time.

There are more articles and books we have read or are going to be reading. ย Like we said, the more we know the more we feel we can make better choices. Remember everyone is different. Stay true to who YOU are and what YOUR body can handle!

Michelle: day off – after running a half marathon and my body traveling for so many days it was a much needed rest day

monday-workout

Lori: I did 5 minute plank workout followed by Tone it Up Wild Child interval routine and She Sells Sea Shells toning routine. Wore my raw threads wine shirt and running skirt. I must say I really liked working out in this outfit–made me feel ‘better’ in my workout. Funny how your workout outfit can change the way you feel when you workout.

Michelleโ€™s day 18 of healing recap:

Remembered to take my fish oil pills, ย l-glutamine,ย probiotic and of course gelatin with coconut oil.

gelatin-mix-coconut-oil

I know so tasty looking haha

Yesterday was our last day in California so I did my best to eat up the remaining food that I bought.ย So bear with me as my eats are a little strange.

grapefruit-pear-breakfast

Enjoyed a grapefruit and pear to start my day.

banana-coffee

Next I enjoyed a banana with ย black coffee in my new mug! ย Love the shape of this mug.

trying-to-do-work

I did manage to get motivated to do a little work and sip on a little bit more coffee.

I did not do that much work yesterday as I needed. ย Just knowing I will be home soon is all I could think about. Plus, it was a very nice leisure day for me especially after the last few days. I felt like by body needed a little down time before traveling back east.

quacamole-lefovers

A little bit later I finished off my guacamole with some gelatin. ย Told you my eats were strange. ย What can I say, I love my avocados and can probably eat just about anything with them.

salmon-coconut-oil

Next I felt like some protein. Here I enjoyed a whole can of salmon with ย coconut oil. I was running out of ‘food’ to eat and wanted to eat up the foods I had bought, so I made do with what I had. Looking forward to being home and really cooking meals again.

michelles-dinner

For my last night at Disneyland our group did go out for dinner one last time. Dinner was grilled salmon, broccoli and green beans. Simple and tasty.

After my fun meals the day before, yesterday’s eats look a little boring ๐Ÿ˜‰

Michelle ย Day 18 recap –

Bathroom: very little success

Energy: good

Gas: ย some discomfort and a little bloating

Skin: no complaints

Water intakeย โ€“ drank about 50oz water

Loriโ€™s day 17 of healing recap:

I took my morning probiotic,ย  1/2 tsp cod liver oil/butter blend, and l-glutamine and gelatin.

egg-breakfast

Post-workout meal was 2 whole eggs (left both yolks raw), 2 huge handfuls of chopped kale, and 3 oz sweet potatoes and about 1/4 cup shredded brussel sprouts. Topped with turmeric, cinnamon and coconut oil.

morning-coffee

Next I made myself some coffee. Love my french press!

beet=juice

Lunch was about 16oz worth of fresh juice. My last beet in the house, need to go get more. Juice was 1 beet, lemon, ginger, radishes, basil, 4 carrots, romaine and kale.

brussel-crackers

Also enjoyed the rest of my shredded brussel sprouts with a few pulp veggie crackers with about 1/2 tbsp coconut oil.

president-inauguration

Watched the president inauguration with Jax.

sofa-with-jax

He seemed interested at first.

jax-sleeping

But next time I looked over my shoulder Jax was sleeping. Guess theย president inauguration was not interesting enough for him.

zucchini-bacon

Late afternoon snack was one small zucchini with a little bit of chopped romaine topped with 1/2 tbsp coconut oil and cinnamon and 2 pieces of nitrate-freeย bacon.

pulp-crackers

We had dog training again last night, so I snacked on my last bit of pulp crackers (guess I need to make more).

peppermint-tea

Sipped on 2 cups of peppermint tea while Jax chewed on a stick as we waited for Gary to come before heading off to dog training.ย Things we are working on with Jax is always come when called, sit when told and last night we learned place. Gary and I are really liking how training is going so far, our next session is next Monday.

lamb-meatloaf

I took my pre-dinner pills: 1/2 tsp cod liver oil,ย l-glutamine, ย quercetin, licorice, digestive enzyme and more gelatin. I also took another probiotic (I am going to try to take another one a night to see if I notice any more benefits from increasing that).

Dinner was the last bit of my grass-fedย lamb veggie pulp mustard meatloaf with a handful of greens, with steamed brussel sprouts, half avocado, sauerkraut and dulse flakes topped with 1 tbsp coconut oil.

Also enjoyed my last coco thin mint.

thinmint

*recipe in our cookbook

Loriโ€™s Day 18 recap:

Bathroom: bowel movement in the morning,ย stool was like a 2-3

Energy: great

Gas: gas after dinner, with a little bloating before bed

Skin: still dealing with the few pimples on chin, forehead and next to nose- slowly starting to go away

Water intakeย – 9 cups water (does not include juice)

Yesterday was overall a great day for me.

As Michelle is traveling back home we are excited to really talk again about all the new readings we have read to discuss any changes we want to do with our eating plan.

Again we wanted to say thank you for letting us share our daily eats here. We know these daily eats might be boring for some, we hope to work on some recipes here soon.

We get a lot of questions about this healing gut journey and we hope to address those questions in a Q&A video. Remember if you have a specific question please let us know as we are here to help in any way that we can–as the journey to better health can be confusing at times.ย  Even weย get torn on what to do and what not to do.

Twins Question: Have you read any of those articles before? Anyone else follow the GAPs or FOODMAPS way of eating? Any more articles or books you would like to add to our list? ย Please leave in the comments below as it might help one of our readers. ย Do you get confused on the different food and diet research and information out there?ย

til next time,

xoxo

The low fodmap diet has helped my skin and all sorts of stomach issues that I was never able to figure out. Good luck!

I’ve been reading a lot about fructose malabsorbation too lately. Interesting. But I sooo hope that’s not my problem! ๐Ÿ˜‰
I already eliminated cabbage and such and I don’t want to have to limit more at the moment.. Hm..

I get extremely confused and frustrated with all the confiding dietary advic. It almost makes u paralyzed at meal times. High carb? Low carb..vegan? Paleo? Eggs, dairy, red meat, fish, poultry, beans, grains, starches, fats, fruits, veg…. Everyone has their own opinion and “research” about which of these is health or harmful and also the amount that should be consumed.

I get sick of the latest fads diets: raw, paleo etc People tend to do things to the extreme, too. It’s hard to trust dietary advice bc u don’t know who is supplying truthful research or skewing it in their favorite to support their personal agenda

I tried gaps and Scd and those didn’t help. I had bad gerd the entire time and horrible constipation. My body seems to be better with fiber.

Have u read any books by Dr Joel fuhrman? His approach supports a high nutrient intake, which supports the immune system and help combat nutritional, hormonal, and dysbiosis imbalances.

Fodmaps can be helpful too… Its just hard to figure it which fodmaps u react to, in what amount, etc. I also find that I react badly some foods in a category but ca tolerate others in that same genre. Odd

A good source to check out is Fast Tract Digestion by norm robillard. It is similar to fodmapsbut takes it to a higher level. I just ordered the book. Check it out if u can

Another book I keep hearing about is the Perfect Health Diet. Idk how legit is is…. They also recommend tons of supplements, and a lot of the research seems a bit skewed to their hypothesess. They only have tyrs of research behind them, whereas fuhrman has decades and thousands of testimonials but I ordered it too. What I find odd is that they have too many positive amazon reviews, which makes ya wonder. It is also highly touted by paleo peeps, so take from that what u will

I don’t think paleo is the way to go, to be honest. Too high meat consumption has never been proven to be health promoting, whereas high amounts of produce is. I also don’t think it is wise that many groups condemn grains and especially legumes. Legumes in particular are loaded with nutrients if prepped correctly. There is no risk of any toxins if u soak or sprout them. They are a natural food that humans have been eating for eons. Look how healthy Indian cultures are and they surround their diets on rice and beans

So, from all my research, it seems that high amts of veg, (raw and cooked), fruits (low fodmaps ones like ripe bananas, citrus, dates, berries), legumes, nuts seeds, avos, gf grains and starches should form the bull of the diet. Small amts of pastured eggs are great and occasional consumption of sardines, whitefish, salmon are also good options. I don’t think dairy and red meat are things that should be consumed and would bhave been hard to come by during caveman timed. It seems like it would be more easy for cavemen yo eat vegetation and the occasional egg and fish when available… Seems odd that they would be suckling the teat of other animals and being able to kill large game. I could see them even eating the occasional small game but even then, it seems like it would be very infrequent, if at all

The best way to eat is to flood ur body with nutrients from plant sources and then add small amounts of denser proteins to support amino acid balance. Thus, my findings point to a predominately fuhrman style of diet, but with a but more allowance with eggs and possibly fish or small game. Legumes should not be avoided… They support good flora balance, weight management, appetite regulation, bowel health etc. Start slowly with 1tbs per day and work up to half to a whole cup. Plus, life is sad sans hummus lol. Easy legumes are aduki, mung, lentils, peas, anasazi

Lastly, biochemical imbalances are huge underlying causes in gi and emotional health. (btw, ur skin is a reflection of ur gut… If u have bad acne on ur face and back, imagine what the inside of u might look like!) zinc deficiency is key…. Optimal levels are >100 serum. Get this checked bc Inc copper imbalance can be a root cause. Without proper zinc, u can’t manufacture adequate enzymes (including digestive enzymes) and hcl. Lowzinc is vital in immunity

I second the advice to read works by Dr Joel Fuhrman. He is a leading nutrition based doctor and his advice is based on actual research. I was interested in some of the other gut healing plans out there but found little research to back them up. Best of luck on your journey!

Kristen, do u follow Dr fuhrman and if so, what exactly are u doing? It is hard to know what exactly to do… A lot of these books tend to skew research in their favor so it’s hard to figure out who’s right

So much good information in this post. Will definitely be reading through those articles when I have more time. Just wanted to pass on that I started taking powdered magnesium at night. I found one that’s plain, no fillers, sweeteners or flavors. I mix 2 tsp with hot water and then add a tea bag. I don’t taste it at all. And the best part, it’s been really helping to make me regular. The first 3 days were terrible, because I had to go but it was so hard to pass. Must have been so backed up. But I kept with it and now i’m going to the bathroom every day with no issue. It’s been life changing. Anyway, just wanted to pass that along. I know you guys are doing the magnesium on your skin, but you might try the powder and see if that changes anything for you.

thanks Rachel, sounds very interesting thanks for sharing and yay for being regular ๐Ÿ™‚ we do take some magnesium pills not everyday and we find those help, but maybe the powder form would work better. thanks

hi Ladies! for your next Q&A my question is about gelatin as I’m interested in adding it to my “regimen” as well. Have you noticed any changes/improvements? Does it taste weird or gross? What are some good ways of incorporating it into your day? Wellness Mama has a couple of pages devoted to gelatin, and her arguments make sense to me (I’m also not veg so the “idea” of eating it doesn’t really gross me out). hope you two are having a great week so far, and I love getting new meal ideas from your site! ๐Ÿ™‚

LOVE LOVE LOVE low fodmaps. I find I can tolerate some but there are a few that kill me. I do no dairy, gluten, soy, corn, and sugar. The fodmaps that are the worst for me are broccoli, cauli, cabbage, brussels, apples, pears, mangoes, and watermelon. It is a lot of playing around to see what you can tolerate, but once you know, it is super helpful! Thanks for the great links!

I actually *just* started doing FODMAPS this week…I’ve been Paleo since May, but my acne hasn’t gotten better. (That’s a lie…it’s much better than when I was a vegan, but it’s still pretty awful.)

I had a HORRIFIC flare up yesterday, and I’m concerned, since I don’t know if it’s because I’m not eating FODMAPS & this is just a die-off situation, or if I’m just on the completely wrong path.

I know the majority of my problems stem from hormonal imbalances (the result, believe it or not, from overconsumption of phytoestrogens from soy while vegan, or so I suspect), but even in trying to rebalance my hormones, I’m still without a period and still embarrassed to show my face in public most days.

I wish you guys a lot of luck on your journeys…I’m blogging about my own acne issues over on my blog, but I definitely haven’t gotten as in-depth and open as you guys. Thanks so much for providing such a great resource for the rest of us!

Stay hungry & keep being awesome,

thanks Kalla! yay I stil go through flare ups on my face from time to time, like last week I got a few large pimples and very small ones along the chin. I was thinking it was from the red wine that I enjoyed one night, I think my face breaks out when I have red wine, other than that my diet as been pretty much the same, so not sure why I got the breakout. So still confusing for me too. Hang in there, we both will get through this journey. I think by just being aware and taking steps to better health is a great start. I wish you all the best. xoxo

Hi Ladies,
I’ve really enjoyed following your journey, I’ve been eating more coconut oil and fish lately inspired by some of your changes. Just wondering if you enjoy chicken and pork or if you avoid them for a specific reason?

Hey Katie, glad we have inspired you to eat more coconut oil and fish! We do not eat chicken mainly because we do not care for the taste or texture. And we do eat pork (bacon and pulled pork).

Dear Michelle and Lori
Thank you once again for sharing your experiences so openly and honestly… your posts hit home as I have tried so many different things to heal my body and have found myself constantly trying the newest idea – I have tried raw vegan, vegetarian, paleo etc… – trying everything out there except one thing and that was listening to my own body and taking all advice with a grain of salt and experimenting to find out what works best for me which is likely a little bit of all ideas … I find myself disappointed in those comments from people who insist you should do this or do that as there is no one plan — there are as many different plans as there are people … and my greatest wish is we could support and encourage each other in our own individual self discovery! I love how you both are approaching this journey of healing as an opportunity of self discovery … you are brave and courageous and demonstrate that it is so much more than healing our bodies it is about healing our soul and reclaiming our individual sense of self … allowing ourselves to be different and owning our difference without judgement will set us all free!! proposing there is one plan is losing our uniqueness in body and soul!!! you both rock!! and I am inspired by you!! Love and many blessings!

I too am loving your healing journey entries… so much insightful info for all of us going through similar experiences! I discovered the Fodmaps info on Hungryhungryhippie (Elise has a separate fodmaps site now too…you probably know). Im vegan and mostly raw and was slowly eliminating so many fruits and veg to deal with digestion woes… reading about Fodmaps was a hallelujah moment. I had already removed most high-fodmap things without knowing why. It explained so much! However…im still adjusting and having bad days so im a work-in-progress. I love hearing what you guys are trying, just for new ideas. And here’s hoping this year brings us all a little closer to success ๐Ÿ™‚
