Why eating low-fat is hurting your skin and hormones

by purelytwins

Healthy fats have gotten a bad rap over the years but we think they are making a comeback!

Eating more fats really helped in balancing out our hormones and getting our periods back. From our history of having hormonal issues and a bad relationship with food and our bodies our skin started to pay the price (we both had adult hormonal acne and eczema). Over the years we have increased our amount of eating healthy fats and it changed our skin, hormones and body (and life).

In the past we were afraid of eating fats in fear of gaining weight or breaking out.

We explain in the video below of why it’s important for overall health to eat fats. Don’t be afraid of them. No more low-fat or fat-free products. Those products usually are filled with hidden sugars and unnecessary ingredients.

We share our personal journey with eating healthy fats, provide tips on how to start eating more healthy fats and share our favorite fats to eat (coconut oil is our number one healthy fat choice).  We also share how much fat we eat in a day.

Is eating fat really bad for me?

We share our thoughts in the video.

How eating high fat diet can help with skin and hormones for women. Plus help with fat loss. Eat fat to burn fat.

We had no idea that we were making our hormones go crazy when we ate so many fat free foods years ago.  What we’ve been told for years about fats and cholesterol has been wrong. Fats are not the enemy.

Hormones control our body. So make sure to take care of them. One way to help your hormones is by eating more healthy fats. Our bodies need certain fats for rebuilding cells and hormone production. Hormones are made out of cholesterol. If you don’t eat enough cholesterol, your body can’t make hormones.

We like having a mix of plant based fats and animal based fats with most of it coming from coconut. It works for us. It may or may not help you. We are all about finding what works for YOU. Try something out and see how your body does. There is no wrong or right. Only you know what helps you feel great.

Of course going too high fat and too low carb can also cause issues. We experienced that too. We aren’t saying only eat healthy fats. Don’t go all crazy and start eating a ton of nuts. Yes, they are a healthy fat but too many nuts can cause inflammation in the body causing health and skin issues. We have done that before too and our skin paid the price.

What we want you to do is try to make sure to incorporate some healthy fat into every meal! Eating fats won’t make you fat.

If you have skin issues like we did, acne or eczema, focusing on more fats is important if you want clear skin.

Eating healthy fats can help with getting clear skin and balancing your hormones.

Incorporating coconut oil into our diet really helped improve our hormonal and gut health which then helped with our skin.  Coconut oil provides the necessary building blocks for hormone production, can help with weight issues, reduce inflammation and even has antibacterial properties. Plus it’s great for nursing moms with breast milk production.

Fat reduces hormonal acne more than carbohydrates. Eating fat doesn’t cause an increase in insulin or blood sugar levels. This is good for those with hormonal acne or PCOS like Lori.

The human body needs a lovely balance of all three macronutrients, carbohydrates, protein and especially fat.

But right now don’t get too hung up on the macronutrient ratio. Instead, we want you to focus on adding in more good quality fats with your meals and maybe even replace bad sources of carbs with better carb options. Low glycemic carbs are good ones to focus on.

Focusing on getting good quality food is a great start in improving your hormones and skin.

In the end, we want you  not to be afraid of eating fats.

We hope we have helped you realize that they are actually needed for overall good health, especially skin and hormones for women. The amount of fat to eat will be different from person to person. Play around with adding in more healthy fats and see what it does for your hormones, skin and body.

Yay for healthy fats!! I’m right there with you, but wondered how much fat do you actually eat?

I LOVE my fats. They are satiating, delicious, and of course, super healthy for you! It depends on where you get your fat and what type of fat you consume.
