We asked on Instagram stories if people would like a us to do a taste test of tahini brands and so many said yes. Well today is the day. We got a fun and tasty tahini taste-off video for you.
Let’s begin shall we…
Share this tahini taste off with your tahini loving friends.
We talk about tahini all the time as it is one of our favorite foods. We are known to eat it straight out of the jar
Sesame seeds are simply pureed into a paste or butter, much like almond butter or peanut butter. Tahini is brown and bitter and usually consists of layer of oil sitting on top of a dry, concrete-like paste. The first time we tasted tahini we thought it was truly awful stuff. Kind of like cacao nibs but the more we ate it the more we loved it. Unlike nut butters, it is not inherently sweet. It is more bitter.
We weren’t sesame fans when we were young nor hummus. But we did learn to grow to like hummus as we got a bit older. Then after college when we got into more raw vegan foods our love for tahini became. Even though nut butters are good we really like tahini. It is a great alternative to always eating nut butters.
We have made our homemade tahini before but sometimes it is just easier to buy it made.
Tahini will always have a somewhat bitter taste, but you might notice some brands to have a more excessive bitterness to them. This can be due to poorly roasted or over-roasted seeds or the source of the sesame seeds. There are brands that don’t have such a hard bitter flavor but have a more smooth flavor. But sometimes it does come down to cost and convenience.
Tahini is also pretty nutritious; sesame seeds are a good source of copper, manganese, calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, vitamin B1, zinc, dietary fiber, and protein. So whether you like it sweet or savory, tahini is a vegan, kosher, nut free, gluten free way to amp up food.
We consider tahini a very healthy food and eat it just about every day.
The brands we tried:

- Joyva tahini – overall good and found at most supermarkerts
