I can’t believe my baby girl is 6 months old!!! Where did the past 6 months go?!?!

Loving this period of being a mom. I love this stage. I love seeing Madison discover and learn new things everyday.

Seriously I am blown away how much she changes daily!

I swear she gets bigger every time I pick her up.

Crazy to think she used to be that small. Everyone was right – they grow up fast.

Madison turning 6 months old.

We go in for Madison’s 6 month doctor check-up this afternoon so I will report back here later today with her updated weight.

She is still wearing 6 month clothing for the most part. 6 month PJs and some pants are starting to get tight, so I am starting to gather 6-9 month clothing.

What Madison is loving:

Loves airplane.

Still loves to watch others dance and sing.

Still loves being tickled and rubbed on her belly and below neck.

Loves being in her jumper while I workout and she laughs the whole time.

Still loves to look at yourself in the mirror.

Still loves rolling around to her sides and moving all around in her crib. And yesterday she rolled all the way over to her belly. I was watching on the baby monitor and ran in there to make sure she was ok. Which she was. She rolled herself back over to her back and just giggled. Silly girl.

Loves bubbles.

Loves story time. Just the other day she grabbed at the page in the book and ripped it out!! Gary and I couldn’t stop laughing.

Still loves holding onto your fingers (and hair).

Loves being in her stroller for long walks now that she sits forward, so she can see everything.

LOVES JAX.

LOVES watching us eat and grabbing at what we are eating or drinking.

LOVES rolling around and grabbing at her feet.

What Madison doesn’t like:

You taking her hands out of her mouth.

Sun in her face.

Getting out of water from bath time.

When she is tired she lets you know.

Loud or strange noises.

Seeing me cry or get upset.

How is cloth diapering going?

Great. I promise I will do an update soon.

How is breastfeeding going?

It’s going well, the only thing is she gets distracted while nursing very easily.

She is nursing about 5 times a day now with one solid meal (well playtime with food really). Gets a 6oz bottle before going to bed.

I did experience a week of  low milk supply, but things are better now.

How is napping going?

Getting better!! Most days she is taking 3 naps. Two of those naps are usually 45 minutes to an hour with the other nap being 30 minutes. Although yesterday she did 4 – 30 minute naps, but that is rare these days. I am so happy she is becoming better at taking longer more routine naps! I think one thing that has helped is doing the same nap time routine and trying to always have the naps around the same time (as best as I can).

How is nighttime sleeping going?

It is still going well. She wakes up for one middle of the night nursing,  usually between 3-4 am.

Her bedtime routine is still the same that I have mentioned last week.

She typically wakes up anywhere between 7am and 7:15am with a few times she has gotten up at 6am. Those are really tough on me as I usually don’t go to bed until 1am. Luckily, Gary is up and can help out.

Big Milestones:

She sits upright all by herself most of the time. She loses her balance but overall she is doing fantastic at sitting upright.

She is definitely becoming more independent with playing. She can entertain her self for a little bit. I love sitting off to the side and watching her interact with toys and figuring things out on her own.

Another big thing that happened this past month is she said ma-ma. Well, I know she doesn’t associate me with that name yet, but still I was thrilled. I love hearing her say it. On our walks she is usually talking up a storm.

And she is showing signs of crawling! During tummy time she lifts her butt on and knees up some and moves forward. Crazy. Even though she can’t crawl yet, she can move! I am always amazed how much she can get her little body around. She will be in one spot and few minutes later is completely moved. Especially in the crib when I watch her on the baby monitor.

What about solid foods?

I started giving Madison a little bit of solid foods once a day (in the morning, after her first nursing) this past week. I decided not to start with cereal which is normally recommended, as I don’t eat really grains and I know grains can be hard on babies stomach since so small.

First was avocado. I introduced that first and gave her that for 2 days in a row. She is unsure of the whole avocado thing. Second food I gave to her was carrots. I steamed up carrots and presented her some full carrots and pureed. I am doing a mix of pureed foods and baby led weaning.

Baby led eating avocado and carrots.

I am really liking the idea of baby led weaning. I have started my research and so far it sounds like a great thing. I love the idea of her eating real wholesome foods that I eat. So, I plan to continue to offer both real whole foods and pureed. I do admit I am scared of the choking thing. Any tips for me?

I will share more on how baby led weaning is going here soon.

I can’t wait for what the next month is going to be like with her.

These past 6 months have been the best months of my life. And to think this is just the start! I love being her mom.

  4. I did baby led weaning with both my boys (now 4 & 2). I loved it! For me it took all the stress out of the whole feeding process. They are very good eaters now. They will try anything we give them and eat a lot of foods that most would not think of as “kid food”. I think that has a lot to do with baby led weaning as well as our family staying away from the SAD foods that are typical for kids. Be prepared for gagging at some point. It’s just part of the learning process for babies as they are figuring out the whole eating thing. The best thing to do is only give a little at a time and replenish as needed so she can’t shove too much into her mouth. Also, with my boys, they didn’t really start to fully eat until they were more like 9 months old. Up to that point it was just about exploration and learning. Madison is so cute!

    1. so happy to hear this Amanda, that is what I have heard about baby led that is provides better eaters 🙂 thanks for the tip about the gagging we’ve had one so far but I know the more she eats (well plays) it might happen more. xo

  5. I’m enjoying the 6 month stage with my twins. We haven’t started food yet, still nursing. I’ll do it until they reach 7 months, then we’ll try food again. I can’t believe how different they are from their older sister. They are rolling and starting to crawl. So crazy. I love being a mom to my girls, every stage is my new favorite every time.

  7. Madison is adorable! We started offering solids when my baby was 6 month. I was worried a bit about choking but you’ll see that most of the times it’s just the gag reflex that babies could have which I think is sometimes confused with choking…Evelyn is 1.5 years old now and still doesn’t like avocados. Bananas and sweet potatoes were her favorites at Madison’s age))

Posted on March 28, 2015 at 9:57 am
    1. Thank you. And yes I agree it’s gag reflex

  9. She is such a cutie!! I’m about 3 months in with baby led weaning and we love it!! I wrote about our experience here http://fitundgluecklich.net/2015/03/13/baby-breifrei-das-isst-oliver-blw-what-oliver-eats/ if you are interested. I have to admit: I wasn’t really scared about the choking, and it didn’t happen a lot anyway. Its how they learn, and if he’s not choking now he would do it later when I introduce solids, so I just relaxed. He had to couch a few times, but after some days he had it figured out how far he can stick food in his mouth, and is ok since then.
    Have a great day!! Ulli
