Healthy real food no junk tootsie roll recipe without corn syrup and milk

We are so excited to share this recipe for homemade grown-up dark chocolate tootsie rolls!

Now we love to eat high quality real foods, making things from scratch, not overdoing the sugar, but we still follow the 80/20 rule. We believe in balance. Making good healthy choices daily with allowing in some fun too. It keeps us happy.  We choose to live this way because it works for us. We don’t think it’s good to stress about enjoying a sweet treat once in awhile.  There are quite a few junk foods that we still avoid over all because of how they make us feel — not good. So we avoid them.

That being said…

These tootsie rolls we are calling our “grown-up” version since they are richer in that dark chocolate flavor.

You know we have a sweet tooth.

Even though we eat a lot of good quality fats to keep our cravings at bay… we still enjoy something sweet just about everyday.

It makes us so happy when we can take a treat like tootsie rolls and make a version with more ‘real’ ingredients.  We actually created this recipe  many years ago and finally got around to going through our huge stack of recipes and saw it.  Immediately went to the kitchen to make it again! Although it was originally intended to be more of a Hersey Kiss, but when we made them they were more chewy…and we both screamed tootsie roll!!

A perfect treat for anytime of the year. And great to make for the next Easter or Halloween celebration when candy is involved.

We made two versions! This one (pictured above) is made with tahini and protein powder!! And it still came out. So you can easily make this recipe your own — think of it as DIY tootsie roll.

We’ve seen loads of other tootsie roll recipes floating around the internet, but they typically involve two ingredients that we don’t like or buy – corn syrup and nonfat dry milk powder.

We know you avoid those ingredients too which is why we know you will love our simple healthy version of tootsie rolls.

hell yeah! when my kids were little, I would always make them scoop up the tootsie rolls from pinata fall out just for me or Trick or Treating. Sometimes they would out me and say “these are for my mom” lol

These sound AMAZING! I bet this recipe would be a great base to make the fruity flavored tootsie rolls (I used to looove the cherry and vanilla ones, oh my goodness).

I used to love Tootsie Rolls– now when I look at them I wonder if they ever digest… I may still have some in my gut from Halloween 1984. What a great idea and the ingredients sound delicious!

thanks Lisa! haha crazy to look back and think about if past foods ever really digested sometimes 😉

Ladies, I LOVE this recipe — I can’t tell you how many times I’ve made it in the last two and a half months! It’s been my go-to treat. I usually halve the recipe and try not to devour it too quickly O:-)
