What we clean our teeth with to keep cavities away

Natural homemade toothpaste recipe to keep cavities away.
How to make homemade natural toothpaste. All you need is coconut oil baking soda and some essential oils.

Today we are making homemade natural toothpaste!! Our best friend Alyson would love that we are talking teeth over here. She’s a dentist!

Do you know what’s in your toothpaste?

The ingredients are pretty scary, aren’t they?

Growing up we had our dentist check-ups and cavities here & there. But as we got older we started taking better care of our teeth. We admit we weren’t huge fans of going to the dentist growing up, but now that we have strong, healthy teeth we actually don’t mind going in for a check-up. It’s been a few years since we’ve had any issues with our teeth and we are proud of that. One thing that has helped with our teeth health is focusing on real foods for our diet and using a more natural toothpaste. We first started buying all natural toothpastes before we decided to make our own!

We hope you enjoy seeing how we make our homemade toothpaste. We’ve been brushing our teeth with this mixture for about a year and plan to continue! We are so happy that we finally realized that making our own toothpaste was so simple. And fun. Yes making toothpaste can be fun 🙂

How to make homemade toothpaste using natural ingredients and essential oils.

Why make toothpaste at home?

  • easy
  • cheap
  • you can control what goes it
  • no weird chemicals or fillers
  • avoid questionable ingredients
  • it’s fun

This DIY toothpaste recipe is a money-saving recipe. Plus you bypass the synthetic ingredients that commercial toothpastes often contain.

A little about the ingredients used:

Coconut oil is great for many things like having antibacterial properties that help keep your mouth clean.

Baking soda has anti acid properties so it will protect your enamel from acid invasion and it also possesses anti bacterial properties which protects you from plaque. And you might be thinking baking soda is abrasive, but it is not!  You could use Himilayan pink salt. Or maybe a combo of them, which is something we are thinking of trying next.

Other additions for a great natural toothpaste recipe:

Aloe vera is gentle on the teeth and gums. It’s effective as toothpaste to fight cavities according to the General Dentistry journal.

Activated charcoal which we learned about from Crunchy Betty.  We use it a few times a week and love it. We really feel it helps make our teeth white. As we mentioned in the video it is weird as it turns your mouth black and sink. But it is worth it.

Bentonite clay which is a polishing cleanser with antibacterial properties and helps remineralize. We have tried a natural clay before and liked it, so we plan to add that in to our mix soon.

Adding in essential oils makes  making homemade toothpaste fun as you can tweak the recipe depending on  your personal preference at this time.

Here are some essential oils that are best for teeth and gum health:

peppermint – extremely effective at killing anaerobic bacteria (this bacteria causes gum disease). Also great for fresh breathe!

onguard – helps prevent cavities and gum disease.

lemon – antiseptic, strengthens gums and helps to whiten teeth.

myrrh – acts as both an antiseptic and a soother and helps gum tissue heal.

cinnamon – has antifungal and antibacterial properties.

The cool thing with doTerra essential oils is that you are not only getting a great flavor but the unique benefits of each one.

That’s it friends. This is how we keep our teeth healthy and strong! And still NO cavities over the years.

Let’s get clean healthy teeth together.

Great post, I have been using coconut oil and baking soda as a deodorant for awhile now and love it. I just started using it as my tootpaste too but your recipe probably tastes much better than straight up baking soda (I use diatomesous (sp?) earth which is silica basically and it shines it right up, but the chacoal is interesting!) I need to jump on the essential oil train, lemon would be tasty…

thanks Kat, we are starting to use coconut oil baking soda mix for deodorant too with some essential oils and liking it. Oh yes lemon would be great in the toothpaste 🙂 We really like the activated charcoal.

I knew there were different ways to use coconut oil but I never thought to brush my teeth with it. That is very interesting! I normally purchase toothpaste that contains baking soda but I think it would be great to make my own!

do it Polly, you will love it!

So excited to try this! I have been looking for a toothpaste recipe. Do you girls have any for making your own deodorant?

purelytwins July 31, 2014 - 4:13 pm

We are still working on deodorant.

Perfect timing with this recipe. I just started using On Guard for brushing, but still using commercial tooth paste. I will definitely make this one. I love On Guard, I love the taste of it and the smell is the best. I made hand sanitizing gel with it 🙂 love, love, love. One more suggestion for oil that can be used here is Clove – promotes healthy teeth and gums.

purelytwins July 31, 2014 - 4:14 pm

We love it too! Oh yes clove is great too for teeth thanks Sylwia!

Great news – there is clove in On Guard!! 😀 xx

Love this ! I have been making homemade toothpaste for a while now and its so easy and I am sure my teeth are whiter! I still use lots of peppermint oil for a minty taste and have yet to try activated charcoal although its on my wish list as you can do so much with it and it a great natural whitener.

it is, we love it!

Ohhh!!! I’m intrigued! I switched to using a “better” processed toothpaste last year per my dentist’s recommendation but I’ve always wondered about making my own. What do you guys do if you’re traveling? Do you buy a tube of something for that or bring this with you?

I use a mixture of fine sea salt and baking soda. It sure makes teeth white, that’s for sure, and its healing.

purelytwins August 2, 2014 - 1:40 pm

Awesome Barb, we will have to try sea salt too !

Thought I should mention one thing. I was recently doing a lot of research on homemade toothpastes, and found that glycerin, which is found in 99% of all toothpaste you buy, even the natural ones, prevents your teeth from remineralizing. Avoid glycerin at all costs!

I make my own toothpaste too! The first time I made something very similar to this and then I made one that was bentonite clay based. I’m thinking next ill experiment with mixing the two to get the benefits of the different ingredients!

have to tell you, the ads and pop ups make it almost impossible to read your posts. Its already annoying to have to click through from Feedly and then have to navigate a bunch of pop ups. Love your content and really want to support you but there’s a lot of hurdles to jump!

purelytwins August 3, 2014 - 11:36 am

Rosie sorry for the inconvenience but right now the ads are what keep our blogging going to help cover expenses. We will look into trying to reduce them.

What a great tutorial! The great thing about homemade toothpastes like these is that these are often completely free from glycerin. Although it does have it’s uses, large quantities of glycerin is often not ideal. I would suggest to regularly alternate between commercial toothpastes and homemade toothpastes to make sure that you reap the benefits of both.

Thank you for a good recipe. I just want to say the sound is horrible, if you could sound proof some how to get rid of the echo, use a carpet or room separator. It was so annoying, especially when your are both talking. Sorry I don’t mean to sound mean, it’s just good info your putting out and I want to hear it.

Blessings,
dee

Thanks for the feedback we truly appreciate it. We do have some sound proofing but we will keep working on it.

Hi girls
Exactly how long a shelf life will this have? How often would you make a new batch i am eager to try it

purelytwins September 11, 2016 - 10:31 am

Ours last a few weeks, so around 2-3 weeks.

Jorji December 10, 2017 - 10:15 pm

I made this not long ago, and mine is extremely bitter. So bitter that when I take my first swig of water afterwards, the water tastes like it has sugar. Is yours that way? Is this normal? I am using about 2-3 drops On Guard and 6-8 of peppermint oil. I don’t know if I’m doing something wrong, or if this is how it should be. I haven’t tried to figure out which ingredient it is yet, so I’ll do that before my next batch. Also, I find this makes a lot for only lasting 2-3 weeks. I had to throw quite a bit away, since it is just me using it for now. I would love any advice or tips on using this.

purelytwins January 9, 2018 - 9:42 am

You can reduce it the amounts down so it doesn’t make as much. Add more stevia or xylitol to help with taste. Doterra also makes their own toothpaste that we use sometimes, if you want more info on that let us know.
