thursday jump rope

Yesterday we did Jump your heart out workout from the amazing Tone it Up girls.

Even though we do have jump ropes, we still seem to jump rope without using it. Great workout. We love to jump rope (even without the rope).

Lori’s Thursday:

hugejuice

After my morning supplements and cod liver oil (which I am taking every other day now) it was time for juice. My juice yesterday made a good 20 oz worth. Same juice every morning, just amount varies depending on how large the apple or romaine head is. So satisfying.

plain banana

Little bit later came back to snack on a banana with my coffee.

eggs with cod

Lunch was some saute arugula with 2 eggs, some cod, and steamed beets with coconut oil.

simpleveganproteinmuffin

Later afternoon snack along with matcha green tea was hemp protein english muffins topped with coconut oil and cacao nibs. The addition of cacao nibs just gave it a little something special.

mahiavocadoandparsnips

Even though Spring is in full bloom (with all the lovely pollen everywhere my seasonal allergies are going crazy) Gary and I are still enjoying our dinners outside. I enjoyed grilled mahi mahi, a few brussel sprouts, parsnips fries, little butter lettuce and half avocado. Topped with coconut oil.  Along side a favorite of ours — kombucha cocktail ( some kombucha with vodka).

Michelle’s recap:

green juice

Green juice with morning supplements.

spotted banana

Banana and coffee while I worked.

egg cod salad

Next up was eggs (cooked in a little ghee) mixed with lettuce, beets, and cod topped with coconut oil.  Loved how the beets turned everything red.

I was busy working that I did not realize how much time had passed that I was starving, so made my next meal a little bigger with the addition of cod. I really enjoyed having some additional protein mixed in with my usual egg salad meal, which I know I have mentioned before. I felt great after eating this, better than yesterday’s lunch. So starting to see my body needs a good balance of everything at each meal.

snack

Afternoon snack – hemp english muffin with TAHINI and cacao nibs! The perfect combo!

dinner

Ended my day with another great meal – salmon with arugula, brussel sprouts, coconut oil, and the best parts -parsnip fries and more tahini!

raw dough balls

Made up some raw cookie dough to practice an egg-free version of our cupcakes.  Cupcakes did not come out, but I enjoyed some raw dough balls ;)

Lori’s thoughts:

I have not given an health update in some time. Michelle and I have been keeping track with each other about how we are doing as we have really stopped sharing every detail on the blog. Basically we are both still struggling a little with our skin. My face acne is somewhat controllable now (meaning I tend to get a few pimples here and there). And my back/shoulder acne is doing alright, there are days were I feel it is getting better. Just healing really really slowly.

And for Michelle, she is still struggling with red patchy itchy skin on her legs and red bumps on her arms.  Both of us suffer from seasonal outdoor allergies (which I know most people do). But on the POSITIVE side we are having continued success in the bathroom the past few days! Which is huge for Michelle.

A new supplement I have started taking again (thanks to many reader recommendations) is Vitex! I have taken this before, but realized I never gave it enough time. Based on my latest research it takes many months. I do feel hormones and stress are my biggest things I am battling, so I am taking steps to heal those!

Love reading your daily food updates. Would love to know how you balance meals when people are eating different things at the same meal (ie – Lori, how do Gary’s meals vary from yours and do you have to cook two different meals each night at dinner?). I don’t eat wheat or dairy, which means my boyfriend doesn’t either when I cook (which is most of the time). I feel bad sometimes, but I don’t have enough time to cook two different meals!

Good question Meg, luckily I am lucky and Gary eats anything that I make him. So what my meals look like for dinner is usually want he eats, his breakfast and lunches are different though. But dinners are usually the same.

  2. oh I’m excited for the recipe :) I love how much your parsnip fries look like REAL fries! good job girls :)

I, too, find that I need a good balance of EVERYTHING at each meal or I walk away and am hungry shortly after.

    Love you

  3. Oooohh yes, I’ve been taking Vitex for almost a year now in the tincture my naturopath makes for me. It definitely takes time for anything new to take effect. I’ve been waiting (im)patiently for zinc to make some sort of difference, but I’ve only taken that for about 2 months. Anything to do with hormones and stress is going to take it’s sweet time, I have to remind myself of that over and over again. Especially when it all flares up, it’s been a rollercoaster for me as well :(

I’m doing the food blood test next week (ELISA); for some reason we are not seeing very many results since last year when I started working with my naturopath, regardless of the many things we have tried. She thinks that perhaps because I already have Celiac, there may be underlying food intolerances that we still have not pinpointed yet. I’m nervous because I’ve had to eat a few things I haven’t eaten in a year! I hope something comes out of this…

Hang in there girls, love you both! xoxo

Christa, I have to remind myself of that too, over and over again!!! My rollercoaster ride is not over yet ;) but I am determined to make it stop one day.
      love ya too!

That’s great that u are able to tolerate fruits now (apple juice and bananas). Why do u think theyr ffine now but they weren’t before?

Also, what do u think is helping the constipation? This is such a huge issue for me and I can’t figure out how to fix it. :(

    • purelytwins says:

I have a few different thoughts about fruit and how my body is liking them. I think it is liking them, though I am still breaking out so maybe they don’t. But I have been reading some interesting things lately and I just love fruit so I know I would like to have it in my diet if I can. I am still trying to figure it all out.
And for the constipation we feel the biggest thing is trying to go at the same time everyday, the squatty potty has helped and increasing our magnesium. We take some in the morning, lunch and before bed. And having the healthy fats in our diet.

So glad to hear you’re experiencing healing! I’m currently healing my eczema and I can understand the frustration that comes from feeling like you’re relapsing. I’ve been trying to keep in mind that it’s normal to experience a flare in symptoms while you’re healing. I’m not following the GAPS protocol, but I have spent time studying the diet and listening to Dr. Campbell-McBride. She probably mentions it in her GAPS book, which I haven’t read, but in one of the lectures I listened to she talked about a “die-off reaction” in which the symptoms get temporarily worse when the culprits causing our problems are released into our bloodstream to leave the body. I try to keep that in mind when I have a brief eczema flare. Overall I’m experiencing a tremendous amount of healing, so it must just be a die-off reaction.

I really hope the Vitex works. I never tried that one. I actually experienced really bad cystic acne back in 2010, into 2011. I went to my GP several times and he just wanted to prescribe me awful creams and antibiotics. I’m pretty sure antibiotics related to my acne caused the food allergies that are now causing my eczema. Anyway, it took several months of searching for answers on the internet and visits with my doctor before I finally took matters into my own hands. I’d mentioned to my GP in one of my visits that I thought my acne was hormonally linked, but he shrugged it off and wrote me another prescription. So I went to the Vitamin Shoppe and picked up a female hormone complex on a whim, and I’ve been taking it ever since. I’ve been acne free for a solid nine months. It probably took me a full six months for the cystic acne and scars to go away. The acne was the first to go and the scars took a bit longer. I still experience the occasional pimple around my monthly cycle, but nothing on the same level as the cystic acne; that stuff was DEEP and it hurt so bad! Anyway, I was so pleased that roughly $10 every two months healed my problem over a couple $40 prescriptions. I really hope the Vitex works out.

    • Morgan C says:

what is the female hormone complex supplement?

      • purelytwins says:

        I am taking Vitex

      • Courtney says:

The one I take is by Nature’s Answer, called Female Complex. I didn’t want to mention it by name in my original comment because I didn’t want it to sound like I was pushing the product. When I started researching herbs that can affect hormones I came across so many that I couldn’t figure out which one I wanted to take. Thankfully, when I went in to purchase a supplement, I found this one. It’s a blend of Dong Quai Root, Red Raspberry Leaf, Black Cohosh Root and Chastetree Berry (Vitex). Had I not found this blend I probably would have picked up Vitex. But this has worked for me.

  6. Your eats look soooo good today! The tahini just makes my mouth water!!!! Thank you for sharing your update again. I have taken vitex before too. I think with everything else going on, it kind of got lost in the routine, but I am thinking in the next month it may be another addition for me again as well.

I’m confused as to why you guys didn’t stay on your “cleanse” diet that you started in January? You both seemed to be doing well on it and reaping benefits from it, experiencing some good results. I recall you both saying that while it was restrictive, you were enjoying it and feeling good. From an outside perspective, it sounded like you may have gained further results if you continued on with it a bit longer, and, perhaps, reintroduced foods back in a bit slower. Have you been thinking about going back on the cleanse or making your current diet a bit more restrictive?

Have I missed the cupcake recipe? I keep following the links, but haven’t found the recipe yet. Thanks!
