first steps to start healing from purelytwins

We have mentioned several different health articles discussing all the different “health problems” out there, so where do you begin? As it can be confusing and overwhelming if you are new to it.

Here are just some of OUR ideas of where to start:

  1. Before you do anything we recommend just start paying attention more to your body now. Don’t change anything just notice how you feel after you eat fruit? after carbs? after a  fatty meal? protein? Are you tired, angry, sad, happy, bloated, etc? Just start making notes.
  2. Then over a few days if you see a pattern then start investigating it further.
  3. Stay positive-  very most important thing!
  4. It takes preparation and patience. 
  5. Take baby steps. Do not feel like you have to do everything at the beginning. You can take it slow but slowing removing things from your diet.
  6. Reflect daily and weekly on your health progress.
  7. Have a good plan. Research. Again stay positive!

Trust us if we did it you can too! (even though we are not 100% healed yet we feel we are on the right path)

Other things to consider:

  • If you do not have a fructose problems then eating fruit is great.
  • If you do not like fermented foods then you do not have to eat them. 
  • If you notice you have bad gut issues then you probably need more fat. Fat from animals and plants. (from our own personal experiences this has helped)
  • If you have any kind of skin issues (like we did) then you might have issues with your gut and digestion.
  • Just because someone else is eating it and having great benefits from it, doesn’t mean you will too.

Remember you are in control. Just listen to your body. Take it slow.

And remember this “diet” is only while you heal. Once digestion improves you can start to bring foods you avoided back in. We feel it really doesn’t matter what you start with, just pick something. Try it for a few days (eat it alone if you can) and then evaluate how you feel. Wait a 2-3 days before trying something else.

Our thoughts and tips if you want to stay vegan to heal your gut. Do we believe you can heal? Yes for some people! We know people who are thriving on vegan foods. It is all about personal choice and lifestyle. Just because someone is vegan does not mean they are better than someone who eats meat and vice versa! We all need to respect one another. Honestly you can do it. But we feel it will require probably more planning and experimenting. And you will not be able to take so many vegan friendly foods out at the start. Just start with one group – maybe it is the legume family. Take a few weeks off from those and see how you do. And repeat for other foods till you feel you are finding your culprit foods. Remember it may take awhile to figure it out.

Hopefully these starting tips and ideas can help you in some way to start your health healing journey.

  1. It’s really weird, but every now and then I wake up feeling dizzy and have to rest the whole day. I thought it could be due to overdoing exercise, but I don’t do that much (40mins at gym yesterday with 16 min fast waking on treadmill, then did some of the machines). Now today I’m feeling like rubbish and it’s really stressing me out ): have you had any experience with this?

    1. Hi Aimee, I am sorry to hear that you’re feeling unwell. Do you have any issues with your blood sugar or iron levels? Whenever I have felt dizzy and have had to rest for a day or maybe even two, it has always been one of these things. Maybe you might want to scale back the intensity of your exercises and figure what is happening. Maybe try walking at a moderate pace and yoga. I try to make sure that I eat a banana 30-60 mins before I work out to help my blood sugar levels. Also, I have enough carbs in my post workout meal. I’ve upped the amount of dark green veggies that I eat as well as adding sunflower and pumpkin seeds to my diet. There are other sources of iron that you can check out. I hope that you feel better soon.

  2. Love love love the sentiments in this post. It took me a LONG time to learn that what works for one person isn’t going to work for everyone. Somedays, it’s still hard to accept that just going vegan or Paleo or starting this or that exercise program doesn’t necessarily mean that I’m immediately–or ever–going to see the advertised results. But taking a breath, assessing how I’m feeling, and making small changes seems to be the best policy….

  4. My biggest tip is to calm down and take a step back. When you think about your stomach/your health/what food is going into your mouth next constantly, you create undue stress in your mind, which creates undue stress in the body, which in turn leads to more drama/physical and mental distress. I know about wanting to fix yourself and wanting it to be done fast but sometimes healing is a really long road and the number one thing you can do for yourself is be patient, and even better is to view the whole thing with a touch of humor. We choose how we respond in all situations, and even when things aren’t going perfectly, a positive outlook truly does improve conditions. When there’s so much information flying at your head from a thousand contradicting resources it gets overwhelming and immediately stressful, so taking the time to be calm for yourself is healing.

  5. Great tips, girls. I would also recommend very close journaling (as you have done) because It can take 4 days (or even more) for a reaction to a food to occur so you have to have a way to look back!!!

  6. Hello! I haven’t commented in a while, but I’m still a loyal reader 🙂 I’ve been following your healing endeavors the whole way, and I love hearing about your journey, especially your successes!
    In fact, you’ve inspired me to start my own food journal – and I’ve already started to notice some patterns. Being in tune with my body is something I’m really trying to work on, especially in regards to hunger and bloating/ other stomach things.
    Maybe I’ll even muster up the courage to talk about it soon 🙂 Until then, I look forward to seeing more tips and such from you lovely ladies! <3
