hello friends,
as you know Gary and I bought our first house together a few weeks ago. and we have not even lived in it yet as we wanted to do some major remodeling before we moved in officially. we were not really sure what we were getting ourselves into. we knew it was going to be a big project and take some time but we are realizing now that it is taking even more time! hence we are still living with Michelle while we wait for the project to get a little bit more finished before we move in for good.
each night we drive over to the house to check up on the status of the remodeling. have to keep an eye on those contractors as they seem to not always listen to what we want them to do!
here are some pictures of the new house remodeling.
but first here are some pictures of what everything looked like beforehand.
our master bedroom from the back corner shooting towards the front of the room. you can see the door to the room, then the door to the closet, and then the door to the bathroom. pretty much we are changing everything!
the old shower. I was not a fan of this shower. it was really small even for me to get into.
and here is the entry way into the bathroom. the old bathroom here was just a little out-dated and had a very unique shape to it. it was a ‘L-shape’ style bathroom.
we worked real hard to figure out the best way to redo the whole thing with making it more up-to-date and look more like a normal bathroom.
here is our new entry way to our master bedroom. we had to do rebuild me a closet as we expanded the master bathroom.
here is my closet entry from inside the bedroom. we had some issues here with the size of the door. for both closets we went back and forth on size of door. we decided to go with 26 inch doors that will swing into the closets. we were unsure if we should swing in or swing out. but finally decided that the best option might be swinging in and just using a smaller door like the 26 inch.
these closets were a big debate for a long time. I think we made the right decisions.
this is a view of Gary’s closet that we rebuilt as well, as we expanded the bathroom into some of the ‘old’ closet and took out the linen closet that they had in the original bathroom.
here is the front of our old bathroom. this is the old toilet and old vanity. we got a new toilet coming in and a brand new vanity that we picked out a few weeks ago. we have heard that it has arrived!! excited to see what it looks like when they put it in soon.
this is the old and tiny shower that the original bathroom had that we are replacing with a tub and a separate shower.
the demolition begins – so excited but yet we are a little nervous as well. this is a big project for our first house together.
our new entry to the master bathroom, we finally got lights in there. the electrician was out there before Gary left for the wedding. so when I got back it was my first time seeing the bathroom with the lighting in there. I approved of what Gary came up with for the lighting.
my entry to my new closet. and you can see Gary’s closet entry over there to the right side of the picture.
our new TUB! well just the layout of it.
again we changed our thoughts on the position of the new tub. first we had it going long ways against the wall but then decided to turn it to be adjacent to the shower.
here is where our new shower is going to be. it will be tiled with glass doors. then the tub right there next to it. and you can see Gary’s closet there behind the shower.
remodeling status of today:
well, last night we went over to the new house and everything is coming along great. they have prepped the floors to put down the red oak wood flooring that we picked out. so hopefully that gets put down soon!
as for the bathroom and new closets, everything is built and has new dry wall up. now we are just waiting for the contractors to start putting the tile down and put in the new vanity and toilet! then there is just the painting left to do.
exciting times. they are thinking another 2-3 weeks before it is COMPLETELY finished. yikes. guess Michelle is getting us as roommates a little bit longer.
a little side note- this new house of ours already has given us our first major plumbing issue. before any of this remodeling began we ran into a major plumbing issue. Gary worked hard over a few weeks with a few different plumbers to see what the problem was. it was a little stressful there for some time as we could not use any restroom. but now everything is working fine. so hopefully we do not run into any more plumbing issues. fingers crossed!
Twins Question: so what do you think of the remodeling? anyone else experience plumbing issues at your home? anyone have fun plans for this weekend? what about cinco de mayo?
till next time,
xoxo

We are remodeling our first house too like you guys. However we did what we could before we moved in (due to apartment leases) and are now finishing the rest ourselves while living there. It’s definitely hard, but rewarding and I’m sure jealous of you guys for getting it done ahead of time!
We always have plumbing issues while doing that type of work… everytime my husband gets one leak fixed another starts
Never ending bliss!
haha so true Stacey! and good luck with all your house projects. we plan to be living there soon while still working on a lot of little projects, mostly painting kind of projects
Yikes! That’s a lot of work! We always talk about buying older homes, but the remodeling is the scariest part. As of yet, the two homes we’ve owned, we have had built so we didn’t have any major issues. I can’t wait to see the final product of the house! It’s gonna be amazing!

Must be plumbing issues in the stars for some, I just had my pump go out on my second bathroom in my condo, which resulted in water pouring out the back of my condo and into the emergency stairwell and down 8 stories. Thank goodness it didn’t flood my condo except for a few areas of wetness, and since the majority of the water went out the back wall into the stairlwell, it didn’t damage any neighbors below.
It was the weekend from Hades this past weekend, with my mother getting robbed on Friday (house robbed, not her at gunpoint or anything) where they stole all her jewelry her late father had commissioned especially for her when they lived in Japan (irreplaceable), having a contractor at my job scream at me and call me the stupidest doctor he’s ever spoken to at work on Saturday (I don’t normally work on Sat, I was supervising something as a courtesy for my fellow physician, needless to say he was fired and not paid for his work he had completed up to that point), and then my condo flood on Sunday. If they come in 3s, I hope my drama is over for at least a little while. Hopefully your all’s plumbing issues are resolved by now.
wow Julie! sorry to hear about all your issues! I do hope you drama is over as well!!!! Thinking of you
HUGS
We too ran into major plumbing problems when we bought our house. There had been some bad plumbing work done between the two bathrooms so if one shower clogged, the other filled up too. Horrible! But last year we remodeled the main bath, had the plumbing redone and since then have had no problems. Here’s hoping that you too will have all your plumbing fixed now. Looking forward to seeing the progress. Congratulations on all your big adventures you two have been experiencing.
Elaine glad we are not the only ones who had plumbing issues! and thanks, yes hopefully our issue is one with!
Thanks for sharing the details on your ambitious projects! It is so interesting, and it’s something I have rather little experience of, so I wouldn’t even necessarily have guessed that it would be so interesting.
Good luck with it all–so many things to get right and having to use your imagination and handling contractors, etc etc…
Cinco de Mayo–it’s a friend’s birthday party too (I think her actual bday’s today) so we’ll be partying!
love

wowowowow! i know how hard it is to do this kind of project! we gutted our kitchen and it took us like 3 months to complete it. i broke a toe in the process and there were a couple melt downs. in the end, it’s so worth it because you can look at your hard work and be so proud! hang in there chica! the big lesson about remodeling is that it always takes a bit longer than initially expected. old houses are strong but sometimes present unique situations that even the most qualified and talented service people have to troubleshoot
this weekend i will be celebrating with a latin-esque beverage, going shopping and picking up some travel essentials for our big trip!

You guys sure have a ton going on at the moment! It must feel overwhelming right now, just think down the road to the bliss you will feel in your new and improved home
It will be tough for sure, but you will get through it! I’m excited for when it all comes together for you. You both deserve the best!

I think it looks like it’s coming along great! I can imagine what the bathroom is going to look like from the pics and your description, and it sounds like it’s going to be beautiful!
My uncle is a contractor, and while the only real construction we have ever had on our home was before we lived in it {upgrades}, and expanding the doorway and turning the office into a baby room {adding french doors}–I can say it’s all so exciting! I can’t wait til we live in a house someday. It’s getting cramped over here
I missed whether Lori and Gary were taking a honeymoon and where? Or are they sharing the where after they get back? I am so excited to see more wedding pics!

I can’t wait to see more photos of your house as it progresses! and more wedding photos too…
